Watching Bad Movies: Furious 7

This series should have really died a long time ago. That's not a Paul Walker joke because I'm not an evil person. In fact I'm such a good person I sit through horrible movies so that you don't have to. This time, I sat down and watched Furious 7. You guys really owe me for this one because I stopped loving this serious a long time ago. However, I'm a fan of The Rock, but he couldn't save 6. They also added in Jason Statham and I admit it, the dude makes some great action movies with horrible plots.

I love The Transporter series and have you seen The Mechanic? I don't even think Jason Statham is a good actor, but I've never seen a bad Jason Statham movie. I know what I'm getting with him.

I lost love for this franchise a long time ago. Fast and Furious, not the original but the non reboot 2009 version was probably when I lost interest. Those first 3 were about racing primarily. I thought we were going to show different kinds of racing after Tokyo Drift. I sat through Bow Wow's acting for them to start planning heist in the 4th film. Then in the 5th film it just became a straight up action series. I'm not even upset. Just don't show me cars and promise racing when you're going to show me The Rock and Jason Statham being The Rock and Jason Statham. What kind of car would Rock race? Have you seen him? WWE must really have a steroid policy because Rock is bigger than ever before.

Let's start with this. Dom, Brian and the Crew are known criminals these days, but they're recruited for a rescue mission. Also, didn't they have enough money left over from the last two films? Why are they even doing that? Then they start killing characters from Tokyo Drift and a bomb takes out Hobbs. Oh, you thought that film was just filler? Jokes on you, it matters now. Hobbs asks Dom to avenge him because government agents and criminals are just best friends from now on. At Han's funeral Roman(Tyrese) says "I don't want to go to anymore funerals" and Brian responds "There's still one left..." they probably could have cut that scene out considering, well you know, Paul Walker is dead now.

Fast forward through some random Ronda Rousey appearances that didn't really matter to the plot, but get that money. Mia tells Brian she's pregnant with another baby. They're really going for the tear jerker here. Brian and Dom take down Shaw and his crew. Hobbs heals from his bombing injuries really quickly somehow just in time to lock up Shaw. Brian lives happily ever after on the beach with Mia and their kid while she awaits the second. Dom looks at a picture of him and Brian an gets emotional. Then he recruits Sean from Tokyo Drift because you need that replacement in the series.

Now let's talk about why this movie is horrible. First off, Rock complained he wouldn't be able to do this film. He did it for a very minimal role that could have been left out. Remember little Rocky Johnson? What the hell happened? Did someone tell him "Why you tripping? You don't wrestle anymore, take these steroids." and he just said "Give me all the steroids." Chill out before you explode Rock. Pun intended because you blew up and spent majority of your time in the hospital. Jason Statham was cool for a bad guy that refuses to die.

Vin Diesel is Vin Diesel and I always get what I expect from him. Now, let's talk Paul Walker. They milked his death so much. The sappy ending and all the one liners about dying probably could have been cut out. On top of that, they had his brothers fill in for him in some scenes, which is understandable. They also just went ahead and CGId him into some scenes like Caesar from Planet of The Apes or something. Then they through in some digitally edited audio and called it a day. Then they did the super sappy ending where Dom reminisces about how great Brian was. Furious 7 isn't a good movie at all but they know how to milk some real life drama.

Speaking of drama, the cast. This started as a racing series, then turned into a heist series, then a general action series, and now it's a soap opera. They're just having people appear now to say they did like Ronda Rousey and previously Jason Statham before they made him a full blown cast member. This cast is getting ridiculously large.

I wonder if I can get my money back if I send this to the director or something. They suckered me in. I'm not paying to see another one of these films. I don't care. Also the naming is stupid. You have a film called Fast and Furious as well as another named The Fast and The Furious. That's like Ohio State University and The Ohio University. The Fast and Furious series is The Ohio of movie series.

You can hear Darrell on the CP Time and Powerbomb Jutsu podcasts. He also plays classic arcade games on The Cabinet
Darrell S.

Hey, I write stuff, a lot of different stuff, that's all.

  1. Interesting take. I hear you, but I agree with most people: this was an awful series, a blatant rip-off of Pointe Break UNTIL it became action and heists. I didn't like four much, but 5, 6, and 7 are much better films than 2 or 3--even one.

Until the latter part of the series, they were more like made for TV movies. I'm not even saying they're good movies--just much much better than the first three.
