Toonami: Blinded By Nostalgia

Toonami has been back a while, but I'm not feeling the love anymore. If you're reading this but don't know what Toonami is here's a wikipedia link because I'm just gonna say it introduced a generation of Americans to anime. Toonami was a great thing in a lot of people's childhoods. It crossed gender, race, religion, and all other lines and united people in love for the anime. This is too mushy let's move on to my point.

We Toonami but right now we're blinded by nostalgia. Most of the shows on the current Toonami suck or have just become played out. Dragon Ball, been there done that. Inyuyasha, is this 2001? Deadman Wonderland is great, oh, it's the second run? You're rerunning IGPX again already? Do you get what I mean? You may think I'm just some angry, but if you sit and look at the the current lineup, Toonami is living in the past for the most part. We're just too blinded by the nostalgia to see it. Our favorite thing from our childhoods is back on TV, it can do no wrong.

Toonami is missing some stuff. Where is the love comedy? Where are the fair and balanced game reviews? Why does every game get an 8- 10 now? I love Toonami I'll be tweeting about it tonight. But maybe it's nostalgia. The shows aren't all that great. I saw most of them to the end on Adult Swim before Toonami was revived.

Sure, there's the occasional comedic moments in Dragon Ball, One Piece and Naruto. Of course there's Space Dandy. But, there's no comedy anywhere else. Remember when Toonami used to have comedic shows like Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo to break up the seriousness. Instead Space Dandy leads off so you can be depressed the rest of the night.

Sure, that action is nice. Nobody love action more than me in anime. But everyone needs a break. Toonami has no breaks. It's all action, all the time. Can we have more jokes? What happened to the immersion event that was supposed to happen last year? Toonami makes a lot of promises but usually falls short and we stick by it's side hoping that one day it gets better.

But it never gets better. New promises get made by Jason DeMarco and everyone eats it up. But how often does he actually come through. If you ask him about it he just spazes out and tells you that you don't know how hard his job is. Nobody asked about how hard your job is Jason. They asked when the immersion event was going to happen.

We expect Toonami to live up to what remember from our childhoods. But that just won't happen. We make the memory better than it was. Toonami wasn't the great thing. It was that we had finally finished school and could come home to Toonami. It's because Toonami was our break. But it's not our break anymore, but we expect it to be.

I like Toonami I really do I just don't know if it was brought back at the right time. Maybe I'm still not sure if Adult Swim, known for it's low quality, can handle high quality Toonami. I don't know, why I'm still so uneasy about Toonami's return. T.O.M. is gonna be so pissed about this. Maybe more than Moltar when he got the boot.

  1. I agree with this article and disagree. I agree on the basis that there should be more anime on Toonami that consists of more genres than just action. But most won't appreciate other genres imo. I remember how some bitched and complained about Tenchi Muyo! GXP (I thought GXP was awesome and was funny as fuck). Then again I could be wrong. I also agree that Toonami is kinda getting wack by putting on old anime that they already showed. One Piece is a exception lol, if it wasn't for Toonami brining back OP I probably wouldn't of re watched. Toonami was doing good job of brining in new series like casshern sins, black lagoon, eureka 7, etc. I hope that they continue to bring in new anime that wasn't on Toonami before.

I disagree with your statement of not being sure if Toonami was being brought back at the right time. If it wasn't for Toonami coming back in 2012 I might not of gotten back into anime at that time. Toonami's revival brought back my love for anime and made it stronger than ever (sounds lame but I mean it lol) I even started watching seasonal anime, watching subs etc due to my reawaken love for anime (thanks to Toonami).

I just hope Toonami continues to put new anime on to balance out the old anime that they have on their line up. This was a good article broham. -Taiwan

    1. GXP was awesome I felt like the only one live tweeting that shows sometimes. It was the comedy I needed in Toonami. It had some action but it was mostly jokes to ease the mood.

You're right. Toonami may have come back at the right time. Most of us had grown out of the anime phase and Toonami popped up and brought us back at just the right time.

Overall I hope Toonami makes some improvements soon. I probably won't be interested in it much longer if it continues with the same old things. I can watch better stuff on my own time.

  2. I'm sick of these action shows as well. I've seen every damn show on here but Black Lagoon but I haven't had cable since the second episode aobi never finished it. But I'm tied of all this old anime. I know they can get some good new anime not everyone has seen from Funimation. And also we need more comedy. Naruto and luffy not fucking funny and ichigo damn near a broom when it comes to comedy. I love FMA but its the baby Cowboy Bebop in terms of how much it is played.

    1. I like action shows most of all. The problem is I watch mostly action shows on my own time. I like something else every now and then. I need a little comedy in my life sometimes.

  3. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_programs_broadcast_by_Toonami

Here is a list of all the Toonami shows ever aired, do yourself a favor and look at the list of Toonami shows aired before its revival and try to find any comedy shows that weren't forced down by the network or aired while Moltar was host (so shows like Johnny Quest, Hamtaro, or hell even Cardcaptor Sakura are off the table). The only show you got it right about what Bobobo but even still that anime had an element of Action, the block is an Anime action block not a comedy block. Most Japanese comedy just would not translate over well for most mass American audiences. But you're damn sure they would got their balls hot for some action.

    1. So comedy shows don't count because they were "forced down" by the network or didn't air the selected time period you choose? That's stupid. Anime doesn't even translate to a mass American audience. You're just nitpicking in defense of Toonami. So yeah, you are blinded by nostalgia Johnathan. So much so that you want to rewrite the rules.
