So I'm sitting here watching Hunter X Hunter after much harassment from people from three different countries on twitter. I think to myself, what would be a good way to let people know what I think of this series. Then it hit me, a diary. So I'm keeping a diary of Hunter X Hunter and right here I will give thoughts on every episode of Hunter X Hunter, good or bad.
Before I start I'd like to say I read the first three arcs of the manga, but it was a while ago and I forgot a lot so it's almost as if I'm approaching the series fresh. Don't expect this to be updated every day, but every time I watch an episode. Could be 5 updates in one day, then none for a week. I don't know. We'll finish. The first three are in one post because I finished them before I thought of this idea.
Episodes 1-3
I'd like to say this is already better than the manga. Simply because of the pacing. I don't need to read 40 pages of the crew taking a test with the old lady. It took like 3 minutes. Just how it should have been. The first three episodes covered more ground than the first three chapters without any doubt and that's good. It's supposed to be a fun story and the manga just drags on forever.
Lets talk about characters. Gon is a hoodrat. Everyone knows who his father is except him. He's also never left his town based on his reaction when seeing new things. He also has a dog nose. Seriously that nose can smell anything. Leorio reminds me of a teacher I had, therefore I hate him. Moving on. Kurapika has an interesting back story and is clearly the smartest in the group at this point. Personality wise, Hiei called, he wants his back. I'm also not sure if Kurapika is a boy or a girl. Tonpa, The Rookie Crusher should really grow up. 35 attempts over 38 years means he's at least 50 if he took his first test at 12 like Gon. Yet he still doesn't have a real job and is only concerned with crushing rookies, which he failed at. Killua is m favorite character. He hasn't been formally introduced but he's such an awesome character I remember him from when I read the manga. Skate on Killua. Hisoka is obviously a bad guy and he's an asshole. Just gonna turn that guys arms into flowers just because.
Episode 4
Tonpa should just die. He's really paying people to crush rookies for him. This guy is shameful. He even admitted that's the only reason he takes the taste. Pathetic old man. Speaking of pathetic old men, we got some back story for Leorio and I don't hate him anymore. In fact I think he's a great character. The only reason he wants money is so he can be a doctor and perform surgery on poor children for free. That's an admirable trait. But he's a pathetic old man for lying. He told Gon, Killua and Kurapika he was a teenager just like them. But he's clearly an old man. I think he's a pedophile. I need to see a birth certificate.
Speaking of Kurapika, he's a boy. I was confused but he removed some clothing and he's a boy. A lady boy but a boy. Hisoka solved the problem of who the fake examiner was. But because Hisoka is an asshole he did it by launching a kill shot at two people. Seriously screw that guy. That's all that's important about episode four. Unless you need to know Killua is awesome, but you already knew that.
Episode 5
What? Hisoka isn't evil? I mean sure he beat the crap out of Leorio, but he carried him to the next stage of training. He also didn't kill Gon. How can Gon go 12 years without feeling fear? I mean has he never fallen from something high, almost been hit by a car, been afraid of the dark or anything? Killua and Gone are clearly best friends for life now but Killua wants Gon to himself. That's all for this episode. Notice I didn't mention Kurapika, that's because he had maybe five lines the entire episode.
Episodes 6-11
Don't judge me. I watch in long sittings sometimes. Anyway we got introduced to gourmet hunters. They're lame and get really annoying when talking about food. The only thing they did was let us know that every hunter knows some form of advanced martial arts. Tonpa once again let everyone know that his only goal is to crush rookies when he got paired up with our protagonist group. Hisoka killed some more people. Just because he's an asshole.
Speaking of killer we also learned that Killua is a cold blooded killer. Pretty sure his kill count in these episodes is three. Would have been five but he controlled himself. Kurapika used those special eyes of his when he was shown the 12 legged spider symbol of the group that killed his family. Gon forced the head of the Hunter Exams, Isaac Netero, to use both hands against him in a game.
Now I'd like to take a second to establish that Leorio is still dodging the question of if he is a teenager. One thing is certain he's a pervert and he cost the team fifty hours in a timed challenge because of that. All so he could finger a woman to make sure she was really a woman. It wasn't that serious.
So far, I'm still liking this series way more than the manga. The manga just couldn't hold my attention but the anime makes even pointless things like boiling eggs seem exciting.
Episode 12
Being trapped in a room with four other people for 50 hours would drive me crazy. But they made it through. During that time we learned Gon and Killua are killers, but they're kids and can pillow fight for 50 hours if they need too. Tonpa has foot odor and Kurapika is a crazy fast reader. He just read books for 50 hours and finished a ton of them. Maybe he learned some killer fighting techniques.
Gon is smarter than I give him credit for. I didn't think of breaking a hole into the easy path to save time. But he did and managed to allow everyone to pass. At the end of this episode they drew lots. Not sure why yet. But knowing it's a Togashi there will most likely be some sort of tournament.
Episode 13
Who the hell puts a recap episode in before the arc is even finished? That's my only thought on this episode. If you plan on watching HxH just skip this episode.
Episode 14
The reason everyone drew lots is because they're going to be abandoned on an island to hunt each other. Your ID Badge is 3 points and your opponents is 3 points, everyone else is just one point. The objective is collect enough badges to have 6 points by the end of the week. Gon is tasked with Hisoka as his target. As Killua put it "Gon, you really are unlucky." Gon spends the first two days learning how to hunt. He's a fisherman not a hunter. Little did Gon know he was also being hunted by Geretta who was kind enough to give Gon some time.
I'm just assuming Killua, Kurapika and Leorio are also protagonist and just as important. Leorio can't remember who he's supposed to be hunting. Killua didn't bother to look at anyone's ID Badge until after everyone had taken them off. I'm going to assume he'll just kill three random people to get a total of 6 points if he keeps his badge. As for Kurapika, I don't know who he's hunting, but he's clearly hunting. He seems to be the only person in the group besides Gon who knows his target. At the episode's end he's seen in a tree stalking someone while clutching his weapon.
Episode 15
Leorio is stupid. How did he let Tonpa trick him into giving up his tag? He should be lucky Kurapika helped him get it back. Gon is also smarter than I thought. He's using butterflies to find Hisoka. I never realized it but Hisoka really does like butterflies. He's always using magic to catch and duplicate them.
I'd like to give Togashi some props for this. Based on Yu Yu Hakusho I assumed Togashi wasn't able to place small plot devices that become important later. Oda is the master of foreshadowing without doubt. An Example, Nami looking at wanted posters only to get pissed off. An arc later we found out it was Arlong's. Togashi must have been taking notes from Oda. I wondered why they made it a point to show Hisoka with butterflies almost every episode. So it didn't seem weird when Gon said "I can track this guy with butterflies" Congrats Togashi, you've grown as a writer.
Episode 16
This is my favorite episode so far and it doesn't even have one image of my favorite character. Hisoka needs two more tags to get his six points. He runs into Leorio and Kurapika. Kurapika already has his 6 points and Leorio has 4. Hisoka demands that they hand over the tags. At which point they drop their bags and draw their weapons. This was awesome because we hadn't actually seen Leorio draw his knife. Usually he just grabs what ever is around him. But Hisoka prepares to fight. When he sees they're not backing down despite knowing that they are no match, he cracks up laughing. He tells them to leave the badge worth one point and go. Sure two of the main characters got punked out but it was awesome that they stood their ground. Now Hisoka only needs one point.
Hisoka approaches another participant ready to kill him. In fact he does. But while attacking Gon uses his fishing pole to snatch Hisoka's badge. Gon now has 6 points and Hisoka has two. Hisoka smiles as Gon runs off. Suddenly Gon gets hit with a tranquilizer dart from Geretta and falls flat. Geretta laughs and takes Gon's badge and Hisoka's. As Geretta walks away he's beheaded by Hisoka. Geretta was Hisoka's target. Hisoka congratulates Gon on his accomplishment and leaves him with his badge and Gon's as well. Gon fights the tranquilizer and stands up. Only for Hisoka to knock him out with just a punch.
Hisoka leaves the two badges on Gon's body. Gon now has 6 points. Kurapika has 6 points. Leorio has 3 points. Hisoka has 5 points. and Killua wasn't in this episode.
Episode 17
Killua easily beats the three brothers Amori, Imori and Umori. I means seriously he didn't even bother killing them. He just made them hand over their badges. Then he threw the ones he didn't need into the woods. In the process he tricked Hanzo who had been waiting for the brothers to separate. Then he sighs and says "This is boring, I wonder what Gon's doing." Gon is obviously his best friend. I don't think Killua has ever had a friend before. He's always thinking about Gon.
Gon meets up with Leorio and Kurapika on the last day and uses his super duper wild boy nose to locate Leorio's target. Leo quits the group because he doesn't want to depend on them. Kurapika and Gon tell him he got chose. Similar to how a pimp tells a prostitute "I choose you" and she obliges. This is a sad situation. They're pimping Leo. He tried to get out and they said "I need you to get these badges." The forced prostitution of Leo is disgusting.
Leo heads into the cave only to be trapped. He tells Gon and Kurapika not to come in but they follow anyway and find Leo attacked by vipers. The cave was trapped by a dead snake charmer, so any time someone tries to escape they're attacked by vipers. Gon gave Leo hickies... sucked the venom out his wounds to save his life. This is where we end. Cliffhanger.
This will be a huge update. I told you I marathon anime sometimes at the start.
Episode 18
So this episode made me laugh. It was a serious episode. Gon sacrificed himself to retrieve enough of the antidote for himself and Leo (That's what I'm calling him now). To escape the cave they decided to put the snakes to sleep using sleeping gas from Leo's target. But that would mean they would have to hold their breath for over five minutes so they didn't fall asleep too.
This is why I laughed. Gon can hold his breath for just under ten minutes. At first I thought this was a dumb random skill that they gave the main character to get out of an impossible situation. Then I remembered back to my childhood. I tried to hold my breath for as long as I could, just because. I didn't know I was training. But Gon holds his breath and carries everyone out. As a fee he steals the badge of Leo's target. Meanwhile Kil (This is what I'm calling Killua) is at the finish sad, there's only a few moments left and none of his friends are here. Then from the bushes emerge the trio. Kil and Hisoka were both really happy about this.
Netero then decides to interview the nine remaining applicants. Nobody wants to fight Hisoka, that's what the interviews taught us. Kurapika sees Gon is feeling down and gives him an emotional pick up. Good job. Netero has determined some device to test everyone for the final round. I already know what it is because I marathoned a lot of episodes.
Episode 19
Netero has determined a tournament where you can still lose and get another try. Each person has at least two chances to win a fight and become a hunter. There will be 8 new hunters at the end of this contest and one will fail. Most likely Leo, he just can't get anything right except medical treatment. The first fight is Gon vs Hanzo. Hanzo came in and dropped his cheerful demeanor instantly. He's been all smiles the entire time but he clearly takes fighting seriously. Despite the fact that he and Gon each have 8 chances to win he goes all out to start. I take that back Hanzo dominated this fight.
Gin rushes Hanzo at the start. Despite going full speed Hanzo side steps Gon and delivers a chop to his head causing his brain to wobble continuously. Gon is disabled but refuses to give up. Hanzo beats him for four hours and Gon doesn't give up despite the fact that he can't even stand up. Eventually Gon gets up because his brain has finally stopped moving and he can see straight now. Hanzo quickly puts him back down and threatens to break his arm if Gon doesn't surrender.
He broke Gon's arm. Gon still refuses to give up and EVERYONE acknowledges this has been a one sided battle even with Hanzo going easy. Hanzo threatens to cut off Gon's legs if he doesn't surrender. Gon says no and everyone stars laughing except Gon and Kil. Gon says if Hanzo cuts off his legs he'll bleed to death and that means Hanzo will be disqualified and not get a Hunters License. Hanzo just gives up knowing he has 7 more chances to win.
But Gon couldn't take that. He tells Hanzo that they need to work out a way where Gon can still win and feel good about himself although he knows he can't beat Hanzo. Hanzo says "You want me to help you feel good about yourself even after I surrender" Gon says "yes." Hanzo knocks Gon out and says to make sure he gets his license. Kil asks Hanzo why he surrender and Hanzo just says "those eyes won me over." Gon and his special eyes.
Episode 20-21
Gon wakes up after the tournament is over. Everyone passed except my favorite character. Kil came up against his brother Illumi, who was disguised Gittarackur. Illumi omehow he made Kil stand down with just words. Then he told Kil he didn't need to be a hunter until he was told he needed to be one. Kil surrenders without throwing a punch. Later Kil attacks Leo's opponent. Everyone now passes automatically except Kil and the dead man. Gon gets out of his bed and heads to the hunter orientation where Leo and Kurapika have already began arguing for Kil to get another shot. Gon simply walks in and grabs Illumi's arm and demands that he take him to wherever he sent Kil. Eventually everyone calms down.
After orientation Illumi tells Gon where to find Kil. Illumi then tells Hisoka he should kill Gon to make things easier in the future. Hisoka tells Illumi that Gon is his prey, then points out that Gon had shattered his arm earlier when he was mad. Satotz tells Gon that his dad was also his role model. Hanzo gives the group his business cards and apologizes for breaking Gon's arm... he's the smiling ninja again. His mood swings are intense. The group books a plane to go see Kil. Leo and Kurapika use their licenses to get free transportation. But Gon doesn't think he deserves his until he can punch Hisoka in the face. Money management Gon. Manage your money. You have free transportation in your pocket.
Episode 22-23
Kil is being tortured by his mother and one of his brothers, Mil. He really did stab them when he left home. I thought he was joking. His family is fucked up. Yeah I used foul language, the family is foul. They've got him chained to a wall and are beating him with a whip and anything else they can reach and he's just taking it like this is normal.
There are two ways to get in. The side door where Mike the giant wolf hunting dog thing with paws bigger than Gon will attack or the testing gate. The testing gate weighs four tons. The team trains for a few days to open the gate because they convinced Gon to not be dumb and climb the gate. Gon's arm heels and the team gets through the gate. They meet the first of the butler's, well an apprentice. Doesn't matter. Her name is Canary and she beats Gon senseless for trying to cross the line. But when she learns that he's Kil's friend she lets him pass and gets shot in the head by Kil's mother for her disobedience. I see why Kil attacked her.
Episode 24
Mil threatens Kil's friends and Kil simply smiles and rips one of the chains free with ease and tells Mil if he lays a hand on Gon he'll kill him. So Kil has just been taking this punishment, he could leave at any time. Kil's grandfather enters the torture the chamber and ignores Mil. He tells Kil that his dad wants to speak with him. Kil's face just says "crap I'm in trouble." Kil easily removes all of his chains by breaking them. He tells Mil he wasn't taking the punishment because he was sorry about what he did, he just felt bad.
Kil's father forces him to talk about his friends. When Kil tried to be all serious his father made him come sit right next to him and tell him everything. Fast forward in the episode and they've been talking for a few hours, just laughing. Kil's father says "we've never head a father son chat before... blah blah blah.... I was an raised as an assassin that's how I raised you... blah blah blah....you're a man now, just promise not to forsake your friends and you're free to leave." Kil seemed shocked that it was that simple, he promised to remain loyal to them. He grabs his awesome backpack with 6 straps and heads out to the Butler's house where Canary has been taking Gon and the crew. On the way out Kil runs into his mother. She tries to threaten him and he makes her back down with just his eyes. Good, she's more of a slave driver than mother anyway. He walks out to meet his friends. His dad reveals that he still thinks one day Kil will return home to lead the family but it's best to let him enjoy life for once.
Episode 25
We have a flashback to Kil's childhood. Awww, Canary was his boo thing, he clearly had a crush on her back then, but his mother is evil and made sure Kil couldn't have any friends. He was upset and ran off to end the flashback.
The butlers lie to Gon and say Kil hasn't arrived. They play a game risking Canry's life as her punishment. Before the game is over Kil leaves the guest room because he's out of snacks. He finds the crew and everyone happily leaves together, except Canary who smiles as they go.
The crew promises to meat up on the 1st of September to meet Hisoka. During his match with Kurapika he had whispered some information about the Phantom Troupe that murdered Kurapika's family. I wouldn't be surprised if Hisoka was a member. He seems evil. The crew then separate. Kurapika is going to put that license to use and get some money. Leo is going to use his to pay for medical school. And Gon doesn't want to use his so he and Kil are just alone and broke 12 year olds.
Kil points out the strength difference between Hanzo and Hisoka isn't that wide. Then he puts Gon all the way across the street. Gon says he mad that Kil thinks he's so week. He ask Kil where he would be and Kil places himself between Hanzo and Gon exactly half way. Then something magical happens. Kil has his first face fault in the series and calls himself modest. Kil is really glad to hang around with Gon. Kil suggests that they go train. Gon apparently has no idea what training is. Kil suggests they go train and earn money for fighting in the Heaven's Arena.
Episode 26
This is a recap episode, where it belongs. Not halfway through a season, but at the end before the next one starts. You can skip it if you want, nothing new is introduced.
Told you that was a huge update
Well that's all of season one. This has been kind of successful, more than I thought so I'm going to continue with season 2. You can check me out on twitter @OriginalkingD if you want to yell at me.
Before I start I'd like to say I read the first three arcs of the manga, but it was a while ago and I forgot a lot so it's almost as if I'm approaching the series fresh.
