Reviewing The Classics: Blade

Who doesn't love Blade and technically these are horror movies so October is the perfect time of month to watch them. Blade the man, is a daywalker, a half vampire if you prefer to be politically correct. The character has been around for decades and was the first superhero to have a movie that was a success. I don't care what anyone says, Blade was the first and for a while the only comic book movie that made money.

Anyway, the movie starts with Blade's mother giving birth. She dies of a viral infection shortly after giving birth. We fast forward thirty years and Blade is running up in your spot like CJ from San Andreas. Well, only if your spot is nightclub where vampires come to feed on the unsuspecting. If that's the case you're going to have a bad time. The police are idiots and actually took one of the vampires to a hospital because it was injured. I'll be honest, I'm not exactly sure how you injure a vampire without killing it but, Blade did it.

At the hospital the vampire bites Karen who is now marked by the bite. Blade takes her to meet Whistler where she recuperates and is told to leave the city. However, Karen is crazy and does not leave the city, more on that later. Deacon Frost however, is getting together a group after Blade raided his club. He kills one of the vampire elders because they weren't born as a vampire and removes the others from power in the quickest usurpation I've ever seen. He then gives the order for Karen to be kidnapped but Blade was being creepy and followed her.

Blade rescues Karen and it's back to the hideout. There she works with Whistler on a new serum for Blade but can't figure out how to make it work on a half vampire. While Blade is out Deacon's men run through the place. They turn Whistler into a vampire and abduct Karen. Blade comes home and he helps Whistler commit suicide because he'd rather die than be a vampire.

I won't lie to you, the end game of this movie doesn't mean anything. Blade suited up with all his gear and killed all the vampires after briefly being taken prisoner. It was awesome, except that part where he had to kill his already dead mother. Then he goes and kills vampires in Russia.

The plot in the film kind of sucked. But, if you've ever read a comic starring Blade, the plot kind of sucks. They typically follow Blade as he attempts to stop some vampire from taking over the world, occasionally including a ritual and the reoccurring foes Dracula and Deacon Frost may appear. That was the movie. You knew what you to expect and you got exactly what you expected. Don't try to act like that isn't what you got.

For a movie that came out in 1998 it holds up really well. It still looks good, it gives you the proper emotion. It's all good. I can't say anything bad about the movie. You can say Snipes was cold and unemotional when delivering his lines. That's just how Blade is. He was perfect for the role.

I loved Blade when I first saw it, I still love it. Yeah, this one is a biased review. I'm sorry, but at least I admit it. Sure the movie isn't without flaws, but it plays to the its' strengths as well. I love it, I'm sorry. Wesley Snipes was perfect for this role. The script was just simple enough to work. I'm sorry, I love it. I just loved it.
