Mass Effect: Ryder is Better Than Shepard

In Mass Effect: Andromeda you take up the roll of one of the Ryder twins. After the death of your father you're left in charge as pathfinder for the human race tasked with settling new colonies for the Andromeda Initiative. Ryder has a lot placed on their shoulders and they always seem to rise to the occasion, but people can't help but point out that they're not as skilled as Commander Shepard. Well, Commander Shepard was great, but I think that's nostalgia for a lot of people because Shepard actually pales in comparison to Ryder in a lot of situations.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Shepard like most people did. Let's get this one out of way first. In two out of three of the origin stories you can select for Shepard they have gone through some traumatic experience in their childhood. On top of that Shepard is a battle hardened hero before age 30, when we take control. They've survived some of the deadliest encounters in human history and lost entire squads. Shepard becomes one of the youngest N7s ever and is skilled in ways most people couldn't comprehend. The closest thing we have to Shepard in Andromeda is Alec Ryder, father of the Ryder twins. Alec was previously a N7 operative as well. During the opening mission we see Alec plow through entire teams of Kett while we watch in awe as nothing we can do matches up.

Scott and Sarah Ryder on the opposite end of the spectrum are 24 year olds searching for their place in the universe and went to Andromeda to find it. They're going to be a little different than Shepard. They make more jokes, because they haven't been through the traumatic experiences Shepard has. Shepard doesn't even have a sense of humor if you go back and play the original trilogy. While Ryder may make a joke about a conversation becoming awkward before backing out. Shepard would almost always state "I should go," in a monotone fashion. You may miss Shepard, but that's nostalgia, Ryder is just a better character.

I mean think about it, Shepard was an asshole. Even in the paragon options he was known to pistol whip someone or shoot them in the knee. The only difference is as a renegade he would just kick them out of a window or set them on fire. He is an asshole in every way, cold and calculated in conversations. Ryder on the other hand makes a lot of jokes, sure but there are plenty of serious and heartless moments. You're able to shoot people in the back, ignore snipers, shoot people in the face because you feel like it. Despite the joking tone Ryder gives plenty of hard ass inspirational speeches that Shepard did.

The difference comes in the fact that Ryder has multiple ways they can react to conversation which leads to the altering of dialogue and cutscenes. If you're a nice guy but not flirty, Gil may ask you to be the surrogate to his child. If you're purely professional you'll never know about the car Liam had shot into space. The character has a real personality based on your actions. With Shepard you were stuck with one generic personality that is forced to fit into both renegade and paragon options. The team at Bioware did a great job providing options that would make each Ryder seem unique.

With the original trilogy it was Shepard's story. Sure you control him but it never feels like you're in control. As Ryder you become the pathfinder and you choose how things are going to go. You choose how first contact will go. Will you be forceful or peaceful? Shepard was in the first contact war and their opinion of aliens has already been skewed no matter the choices you make. With Ryder, it's up to you how this is going to go based on your choices. I get it, Shepard was awesome, but Ryder is just a better character.

In the words of Shepard, I should go now.

Hey, I write stuff, a lot of different stuff, that's all.

  1. Your point is valid but not entirely accurate.
Shepard has a charismatic character that inspires one to want to be like him while also make you appreciate the fact that you are not.
Yes, he was a War veteran and had the most elite training where Ryder does not have a single mark behind their name, but that is what made Shep relatable, he had a history.

Ryder feels like a child that cannot comprehend the situations they are in, they make light of everything and that makes one doubt their ability to be dependable. Also there are too many instances where it feels like Ryder is on rails when it comes to choices where as Shepard has no limits.

FIY, Shepard was NOT in the First Contact war, he was only 3 years old when it happened.

    TL;DR
Shepard starts as a 28 year old soldier that has to sacrifice everything to save everyone else, a mature character while the player wishes for nothing else than for Shep to just find happiness.

Ryder Starts a 24 year old brat that has no idea who they are themselves and thinks that a new place will answer that, while acting like a teen in denial about the real world. This makes them a bit frustrating and the player wants them to shape up.

You won't hear any player ever saying they had a trip on the feels train cause of Ryder....

    1. Thats why there will be a Mass Effect 4 and not Andromeda 2 .. Shepard didnt die and he is back. Now go back under your Bridge

    2. Honestly, I love them both. Well, the females anyways. The Males of the series didn't quite have me believing they were the sole hope in whichever galaxy they were in. That's why I think I've only played as John Shepard once out of the..... god... I lost count how many play throughs. His voice just sounds like a traveling insurance salesman and not the savior of humanity. IDK just my thoughts.

  5. I feel like older people prefer Shepard exactly because they are in a more stable and controled moment of theis life, Ryder on the other hand is still discovering and every 24yo person knows exacly what it feels like following a path and not being sure if it's the right one. Personally, after the rollercoster of being a Shrios fangirl, being with Jaal and having a loving/nice relationship was the highlight hahahaha
Also having the power to guide how relationships with others species would playout in Andromeda was so cool! I hope we have an Andromeda 2 'cause it was great

  6. Shepard doesn't have a Lot more of variations cause their games are from previous generations with smaller technical limits for the game but if you don't see humor on Sheppard is cause you dont want to the original trilogy is full of funny scenes and memorable quotes an Shepard Character was so good that even today a lot of people not only fans but also media in general are still waiting for a better ending to Shepard story. As never happened with andromeda, even the same year of his release the game was falling into oblivion and thats not just cause bugs. you can play the Original release of Mass effect 1 and the game is not great on facial animations or graphics on general, the physics are just ok, but even with that game Mass Effect 2 had a hype before release

  7. Shepard is very different archetype of protagonist in each part: in ME1 he is a hero type, a badass soldier with loyal team. In ME2 he is more like a Bond: great in combat but also more romance options, one-liners etc. In ME3 he is he back to be hero type but not just soldier but "messiah", similar to e.g. Luke Skywalker and also with more personal issues, he is overhelming by catastrofic events arround him. In Trilogy Shepard was also charismatic and did epic, impossible things and if we switch places Ryder wouldn't succeed in Trilogy but Shepard would have same or better results in Andromeda.
For Ryder, he is just a good guy, with positive energy and initiative but to be honest he is not convicing.
