Introducing Jessica Jones

Marvel has been putting out teasers and trailers for its upcoming Netflix series Jessica Jones. But a lot of my friends have been asking me just who is Jessica Jones and why should I care? Well to be honest, she hasn’t been too relevant in Marvel comics these recent years from what I can remember but she was a big deal when she was first brought to light. Jessica Jones has a powerful story that I feel has got to be told and handled properly. However it’s a dark story with mature content.

Jessica Jones had a series called Alias that launched with Marvel’s new publishing line Marvel Max imprint. Marvel Max was designed to tell more mature stories for older audiences and Alias was one of them. Written by Brian Micheal Bendis, the series was published for 28 issues from 2001 to 2004. The series dropped tons of ‘f’ bombs, discussed controversial topics like rape, and had sexual content. Jessica Jones is also relatively well known to be the wife of Luke Cage a.k.a Power Man.

Jessica Jones is an ex hero who has become a private detective. She lost her family in a driving accident which put her in a coma. She was also an orphan from that point on. Jessica went to the same high school as Peter Parker and even had a crush on him. When she returns to school from her coma after the accident, Flash Thompson makes fun of her and Peter attempts to make sure she’s alright. Jones takes this as a sign of pity and runs away angry where she accidently learns she now has powers.

She briefly becomes a super heroine called Jewel but that life is cut short when she runs into a man named Dr. Zebediah Killgrave, a.k.a the Purple Man. Through the use of pheromones, he has the ability to control the thoughts and actions of those around him. He immediately asks Jessica to strip down naked, but instead forces her to attack to the cops outside so that he could enjoy his meal peacefully. Killgrave then kidnaps her for 8 whole months where she’s forced to do obey his ever demand.

She was never raped by Killgrave but she was forced to do terrible things under his control and she was subjected to verbal, physical and mental abuse. He would often rape college girls in front of a scantily dressed Jessica and make Jessica beg for her to be next. He would make her beg for him to have sex with her, truly make her believe she loved him and wanted him inside her, but then he would never do it. During the 8 months she was gone, no one noticed, cared or bothered to look for her.

In a fit of rage Purple Man sends Jess to kill Daredevil where she runs into the Scarlet Witch and attacks her. Realizing that she wasn’t Daredevil she tries to escape but The Vision attacks her, causing Ms. Marvel to save her (because they have a bit of history prior to this). They undo her mind control, set up preventative measures for future mental attacks and apologize for attacking her. They even offer her a spot on the Avengers, which Jessica turns down.
