There’s the ever going on debate on whether some visual novels are even games but if you want to read about that, check out my blog post about the controversy surrounding visual novels: http://zenpiesama.weebly.com/vidja-gamez/the-thing-about-visual-novels
But today, we’re here to talk about visual novel franchises and/or games you need to at least try. They have a lot to offer if you just take the chance to play them. Sure there’s lots of text but it’s sharply written, enjoyable and intellectually stimulating. Here are seven visual novels I personally recommend.
Fate/stay Night – While I’m at it, just check out the various Type-Moon works. Fate/stay Night offers an interesting tale about Emiya Shirou and his involvement in something called the Holy Grail War. There are three routes in this game and you must complete one route to unlock the next. You can play this on your computer.
Stiens;Gate – If you want to experience a compelling tale concerning the trials and tribulations of time travel, this is the game for you. Extremely informative and has multiple endings depending on your in game actions. Stiens;Gate can be played on the Xbox 360, PS3, PS Vita and I believe soon to be Playstation 4.
Professor Layton Series – Puzzles. Puzzles galore. Math, science, logic based, this game is all about working that brain! You are an archeologist named Hershel Layton as he tries to discover the truth behind multiple mysterious. “A true gentleman leaves no puzzle unsolved”. Most of these games are on the DS and 3DS. There are currently I believe, six games.
Tsukihime – I believe this to be one of Kinoko Nasu’s best works. Tsukihime is the story of Shiki Toono after surviving a life threatening injury becoming the new head of the house in high school. Powerful characters and moments that will leave an impression on the player. I went into this game blind and I don’t want to say too much. PC game.
Ace Attorney Series– Welcome to the courtroom, you take on the role of rookie defense attorney, Phoenix Wright. You must use the law and evidence to prove your clients innocent. The franchise has over eight games in the series and has become a big deal. There are several ways to play the series. From the Wii, WiiU, DS, 3DS and even IPhone. Gameplay requires the player to pay attention and present evidence to contradictory statements to uncover the truth! “TAKE THAT!”
Zero Escape Series – There are two games in this franchise so far with one on the way. Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and Virtue’s Last Reward. This series should be commended for its well written, complex story consisting of many scientific and philosophical themes. You must find various clues and tools to escape the locked rooms. The first game (999) is on the DS and you can play Virtue’s Last Reward on the Vita or 3DS.
Danganronpa Series – Murdering your classmates. Danganronpa is the most engaging visual novel I’ve ever played. A unique art style, great story, fun characters and a deep lore. You’re in the world’s most prestigious school that has a dark secret. The only way to graduate is to murder your classmates and get away with it! The game has several gameplay elements that incorporate various genres and styles such as: comprehension, RPG elements, FPS elements, puzzle solving and even platforming. I think it’s only on PSP (DR1 at least) and PSP Vita for the time being. There are 3 games in the franchise so far with one on the way. Happy killing! Upupupu.
Some of these series have an anime but, might I suggest experiencing these narratives in their original mediums? But anyways, these games are all great in their own right and feel free to give them a try! You won’t be disappointed!
