Nya Hemmingz: Current Favorite 10 Albums

My personal view on music for a while has been that it’s completely subjective. The Meta for music keeps changing every couple of years and that’s fine (IT’S NOT FINE). The other day someone asked me what my favorite albums were and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. Personally, I consider my taste in music pretty strange and unconventional (a.k.a shit). I listen to any and everything if I like it, regardless of what era’s it’s from, genre or language. So my library is extremely random and inconsistent. I have German albums on my ITunes and ask me if I know what the fuck they’re saying. I- I don’t. But the shit sounds cool. Anyways, this list may contain albums, eps and/or mixtapes. I left out for the most part video game and anime soundtracks because fuck you, that’s too hard and I’ll never come up with a list.

10. Section 80 by Kendrick Lamar – I always catch heat for this when I say out all of Kendrick’s work, this one is my favorite. Personally I’d say Good Kid Madd City is his best album but Section 80 is my favorite.

9. Destiny Fulfilled by Destiny’s Child – I used to fall asleep to this album every night. If you turned it off while I was sleeping, I’d wake up. Just holds a special place in my heart. Kelly Rowland for the win by the way.

8. Mood Musik 4 by Joe Budden – When I was in high school this album was super important to me. Anytime I was having problems with my ex-girlfriend or school, this is what I bumped. I thought it was a super, ultra-deep soundtrack at the time. I still consider myself a fan of Joe Budden’s music.

7. Heartthrob by Tegan and Sara – I actually had to listen to all their albums over to decide which one I liked best. But Heartthrob it is because I like the way the album flows and makes me feel.

6. The Blueprint 2: The Gift and the Curse - I never mentioned how much of a Jay-Z hypebeast I used to be did I? It could have been my brother’s influence (it most likely definitely actually was) but either way I grew up with Hov. This is one of two albums I still play frequently to this day.

5. Urban Flora by Alina Baraz and Galimatias – This is a new album that came out this year so I was reluctant to put it on this list at all but hear me out. I started listening to this album on my way to Cuba, during my vacation (like non-stop), on my way back and as a matter of fact- I’m listening to it RIGHT NOW. I have no idea how to categorize this album but its damned good.

4. Get Rich or Die Trying by 50 Cent – I feel like I don’t need to explain myself with this one, so I won’t.

3. Born Sinner by J.Cole
– The best thing about this album is the fact I had no idea it was coming out. So when I randomly heard it in my cousin’s car I lost my mind. J.Cole is one of the few rappers I was listening to from their debut. So I kind grew up with Cole and have been listening to him for years. Born Sinner is just some fire dude.

2. The Dynasty: Roc La Familia by Jay - Z – I just think this album is so great. I love every song on it I just have to have it in the top 5. Remember that I grew up with this guy so I’m pretty knowledgeable about each album.

1. Friday Night Light by J.Cole – On Twitter at least, it seems to be a cool thing to bash J.Cole (apparently his fanbase is annoying). And that really doesn’t bother me, I like him, he’s one of my favorites and as far as I’m concerned, FNL is the best thing he’s ever put out. It’s rare for me to like every single song on any album and I don’t ever skip songs on Friday Night Lights.

Honorable Mention: Rock On by Nano – I love J-Rock and this is one my favorite albums. ONE of.

Shoutout To: Persona 3 OST – The greatest video game soundtrack ever to date. Fact. FACT. FIGHT ME. Burrnnnn my dreaaaaaad.

I’m certain this list made a lot of people cringe and cry inside but this is what I got for now. I mean, I’m sure I’ve forgotten some albums I love and chances are if I check this list later today I’d have thought of something but oh well. This is my favorite ten for the time being. Peace.

  1. Born Sinner and Friday Night Lights are definitely Cole's best projects. Section.80 has it's own charm. Either ADHD or Hiii Power is probably my favorite track. Get Rich or Die Tryin is the only 50 Cent album I can play more than 5 songs from. Played it all the way through yesterday. No joke.

But since you're only picking from bad Jay Z albums you should have gone ahead and threw on Kingdom Come or one of those Best of Both Worlds albums. Maybe even a Joe Budden album. Never Mind.

    I've said my peace.

  2. Well Jay-Z aside because we'll never agree, you really didn't like Get Rich or Die Tryin'?

    1. I played Get Rich or Dye Trying all the way through yesterday. The rest of 50's albums are just sort of there. That's his one good album.
