5 of The Best Diss Songs From Common and T.I.

I guess it's time to look at some more diss tracks. This time I decided to take a look at Common before he decided to start the hug a racist program to end racism. Back when Common was rocking sweaters with leather. I also decided to look at just three of T.I.Ps many beefs. If you want to check out some other installments in the beef series look no further than here.

1. Common - Bitch in Yoo

Long before Common was saying racism could be ended by having a chat with your local Starbucks cashier, back before people wanted him banned from the white house, before Badu, when he was a four corner hustler, Common had beef not of the Canadian kind. Ice Cube took offense to Common's song "I Used To Love HER," a song about how Hip Hop had changed over the years. Cube, Mack 10 and WC, The Westside Connection, released their track "Westside Slaughterhouse." The track dissed Common and he didn't take it lightly. What followed was a Pete Rock produced diss track that could be considered one of the worst lyrical ass beatings of all time.

Common stated "It'll take the Nation of Millions to Hold Me Back," and it did, because Louis Farrakhan literally had to step in and stop Common. In the track Common explains why Cube is stupid for mistaking a metaphor that didn't even mention him as a diss then destroys the whole group. He points out how Cube dissed the East Coast, where Common isn't even from, but his first album was from Public Enemy producers The Bomb Squad.

"This ain't no East coast, West coast, none of the above, I'm from Chi, I went to Cali, niggas gave me love," Cube did not think this one through. Cube's solo career was hitting a rough patch but the movies were doing well so Common gave him some advice "Get some beats besides George Clinton to rock over, rap career is over, better off acting," because you can only take so much G-Funk.

He also makes reference to Ice Cube getting his chain stolen by Shawn Fonteno, yeah, Franklin Clinton from GTA V took that chain during Cube's beef with Cypress Hill. Cube probable thought he could get some street cred back by going at a "soft" rapper like Common. He was wrong. The real kicker was the finish. During Cube's N.W.A. days they had a song called "A Bitch is a Bitch." Common finishes the song by pointing out he won't stop picking on Cube until he stops being a bitch "Anytime you come out, joe, I'mma talk about you, until you let that bitch in you walk up out you, any last words before I hit the switch," Then the kill shot, it takes a bitch to know one and in Cube's own words "From the immortal words of one, a bitch is a bitch," so I guess Cube would know.

2. Common - Stay Scheming (Remix)

Common dropped the track "Sweet," with no particular intentions but everyone kept asking was it about Drake. Common denied it for months until even Drake started asking questions. Eventually he tells Sway "Yeah it's a Drake diss, since that's the way he felt." It wasn't a Drake diss but Drake was so hurt by the chorus of the song he dissed Common on "Stay Schemin," where Drake states

"It bothers me when the gods get to acting like the broads, guess every team doesn’t come complete with niggas like ours, that's why I see no need to compete with niggas like y’all, I just ask that when you see me you speak up, nigga, that's all, don’t be ducking like you never wanted nothing, it's feeling like rap changed, it was a time it was rugged, back when if a nigga reached it was for the weapon, nowadays niggas reach just to sell they record."
Taking shots at Common an all of G.O.O.D. which later led to Pusha T getting at him but we'll talk about that later. Drake immediately starts running victory laps with applause from Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Birdman and everyone else. He fucked up because Common really had no intentions of dissing Drake. Drake got upset and Common immediately hopped on the "Stay Schemin" beat and went in less than 24 hours later. Common wasn't doing shit but watching reruns of Living Single by the time Drake responded, he was done promoting the album and that was Drake's mistake because he thought Common was too busy to respond.

Common states "everybody know you sweet, what the problem is, don’t play dumb, I’m the one that acknowledged it," because Common acknowledged it was about Drake, since Drake felt some kind of way, he wasn't hiding at all, also we all know Drake is soft. Drake doesn't like being called soft or a bitch but Common has a response "I heard you said you wasn’t a bitch because you sing, you a bitch because you cling like a bitch that’s eighteen." We've all seen the pictures, Drake does cling. "Can’t say my name but rap about a nigga’s wife," Drake was doing victory laps but he didn't name Common. He did mention both Kobe Bryant's wife and make reference to Serena Williams who has been Common's on and off again girlfriend and sometimes fiance for a decade. In other words Drake isn't man enough to mention Common.

Then there's the legendary "you ain’t wet nobody, nigga, you Canada dry," that one still gets mentioned a lot. Then Common starts singing Destiny's Child's song "Say My Name," daring Drake to respond. Here's the thing, Drake didn't. In fact Common got tweets from Birdman, Rick Ross, and others who no doubt hyped Drake up to do that "Stay Schemin," verse dissing Common. Birdman said he took it too far to get his respect and was hurting the younger generation (more than Birdman's shady record deals and hand rubbing in every video? C'mon now?) then Rick Ross tweets about when someone goes that far in rap beef they should be prepared to die. Common should be prepared to die over two minutes. Why is it whenever Common makes a diss track it escalates to him getting death threats?

3. T.I. - A.S.A.P.

Lil Flip is known as The King of The Freestyle. T.I. is known as King of The South and Lil Flip did not like that. He spoke on it and both fired a few subliminal shots. Then Lil Flip goes on the radio and does this freestyle to "Lean Back," where he starts mentioning T.I and threatening to knock him out and how he's a 7 time felon who keeps snitching to get out of jail. Sometimes I think the only time T.I. makes good music is when he's in the middle of a beef. T.I. responds on the single for his at the time new album. The first verse talks about how haters want to stop T.I. and he ends the verse with "Rap beef I ain't gonna participate in none of that I'm aiming at your fitted cap, and you ain't gonna want none of that," T.I. isn't into rap beef, he's going to shoot at Lil Flip's trademark fitted cap. He's out to kill Flip and we know T.I. got guns.

The song ASAP where the second verse starts with "I know a lot of rappers don't like me, but they won't fight me," because T.I. didn't think Flip really wanted a fight. He finishes it with "I'm only gonna ask ya find the exit once politely," this is the only warning Flip gets. Leave it alone or get killed. The third verse just gets nasty, finally calling Flip out by name it starts with "Flip, say who known to the land and the people, my plan is to keep you at least two, levels under me where I need you," in other words T.I. will do anything to keep Flip below his level. He continues with "I'm grown nigga, so let it be know we ain't equal, you sadly mistaken if you thinkin' I can't reach you, beat you, to a fuckin' pulp if I need to, the very spot ya standin' in then is where I'll leave you." Flip and T.I. are the same age, difference is Flip has been famous in Texas since he was 16, and 18 nationwide. T.I. didn't start gaining fame until he was 20 and as he stated "My first album had just gone not shit and he (David Banner) said he still wanted to work with me. We sold 12,500 records. You think I'm ever gonna worry about not selling some records" By the time T.I. really started catching on he was probably 23-25. T.I. matured and Lil Flip never had to.

After this song Flip started threatening T.I's kids. Flip was a major artist and starts threatening to kill T.I's kids. Tiny later stated she had been holding T.I back because she knows his temper can be crazy, but after threatening the kids she let him loose. T.I goes to shoot a random DVD in Flips little home town of Cloverland for no reason. Flip can't look soft so he rolls up with his crew. T.I. gets sucker punched by Flips body guard who is beat down by Big Kuntry of P$C. Flip gets in a sucker punch then tries to run but it captured by MacBoney of P$C who throws Flip to T.I. Apparently they beat Flip to a pulp and literally dragged him around the parking lot. Someone in Flip's crew starts shooting and of course T.I and P$C fire back. Luckily nobody was hit by the bullets. Footage of the fight has never been posted online but Flip has talked about how it "set me free". However the video did get around Texas somehow. Texas legends like Z-Ro call Flip a bitch for his actions and Lil Keke says he was out of line and way out of his character. People distance themselves from Flip for making Texas look bad and Lil Flip's career quickly spirals down hill from there.

On the track "ASAP" T.I stated "Listen nigga this shit here is more than just a lotta rhymes, I don't know what ya do for your respect, but I'mma die for mine." The moral of this story is don't mention someone's kids in a beef after he tells you he's willing to die for respect. If he's willing to die for respect he's willing to come to your home town and beat your ass for his family. Flip should just be lucky Pimp C stepped in to squash the beef before T.I. decided to really kill him and Flip had some fans and a career left.

4. T.I. - What's Up What's Happenin

Shawty Lo most know for his time in D4L with their hit single "Laughy Taffy" and attempt to start beef with "Dem Franchise Boys," is no stranger to beef. He released the song "Dumm Dumm," while T.I. was locked up. The song directly called T.I. out and questioned if he was really hood. Stating that if T.I really came to the hood like, for example Bowen Hills, where Shawty Lo is from, he'd get robbed and killed. Shawty Lo just kept going while T.I. was in jail. Then T.I. gets out while the trial is going on and he starts recording Paper Trail and filming videos. T.I. records "What's Up What's Happenin," which is directly aimed at Shawty Lo. Again, T.I. makes really good music when he's beefing and it's always a single with a video. That's what drives people crazy.

In the song T.I. starts the first verse explaining that the money he spends at strip clubs is the same as what Shaty Lo is paid for a show. Just jokes, then he gets serious with "boy you so damn lame, your click the same, a just a bunch of walkin' shit stains, disgrace the A, you give the city such a bad name." When Nas dropped his album Hip Hop is Dead a lot of Southern rappers took offense. They claimed Nas was targeting the South because that's who had the attention at the time. A lot were rappers from Atlanta that really took offense. One of those groups that was vocal was D4L, Shawty Lo's group. T.I. is stating they disgrace the city with their music. They really are killing hip hop. D4L never dissed T.I. but they were in that video for "Dumm Dumm," so they caught shots too. He states "Go on get your dissing on while the king gone, your self-esteem gone, cause I'm back now, let's see if we can teach these niggas how to act now," and Shawty Lo's self-esteem was gone because all the diss tracks stopped when T.I. was out of jail. I wonder why? Doesn't matter, he's gonna teach him how to act. Shawty Lo also had a serious of videos where he would ask random people if they ever knew T.I. or hustled with him as he claimed. T.I. responds to that with "Hey, what I care 'bout who you asking saying they ain't heard of me, I'm certified certainly your videos ain't hurting me," I'd say T.I. is certified after 8 felonies. T.I. ends the second verse with "Cause I yelled "Bankhead" and you felt left out, I ain't mentioned your name, is that what all this 'bout?"

He doesn't actually mention Shawty Lo's name in the song which makes this line all the funnier. T.I. shouts out a lot of rappers from Atlanta and Shaty Lo isn't one. T.I. feels that maybe Shawty Lo just wanted a shout out. The third verse features T.I. comically mocking Shawty Lo's plan to diss him when he was locked up. T.I. never mentions Shawty Lo, just makes references to all the things he did. How do we know 100% for sure that this is about Shawty Lo. Well T.I filmed the video in Bowen Hills, the same hood Shawty Lo said he would die or get robbed in. In fact, he filmed some parts on the steps of the house Shawty Lo grew up in. He opens the video by setting up a chair in front of the Bowen Hills sign. Nobody attacked T.I. in fact he bought bikes for all the kids in the neighborhood. Shawty Lo did try to fight T.I. at the Dirty Awards and T.I. probably would have but he had that whole gun case going on. Also security just happened to be there moments before Shawty Lo. In the end Shawty Lo apologized to T.I.

5. T.I. - I'm Back

Something about T.I. making all his diss tracks singles is just crazy. The song "I'm Back," was released after T.I. finished his jail sentence for his various gun charges and takes aim at both Alfamega and 50 Cent. When T.I. started rapping 50 Cent stated "He'll be lucky to make it ten years," stating T.I. would be a one hit wonder. 50 continued bating T.I. but T.I. never responded because it was just typical petty 50 Cent talk. Then while T.I. was in jail the song "You So Tough," leaked. It wasn't an old diss 50 did. It was a new song where 50 is directly calling T.I. a snitch stating he should have got 10 years at least for all of the guns he had. Well, T.I. had to respond now because 50 sat down and wrote a whole verse about him.

As for Alfamega, rumor has it he's the one who snitched on T.I. and he would never deny it. It was also learned that he had cooperated with federal agents in the past to reduce his prison sentence. T.I. just dropped him from the label and left it at that, blaming himself for not looking deeper and letting Alfamega into his personal life. Then Alfamega started doing diss tracks. T.I. opens stating his distaste for the blipster movement. You know black hipsters in skinny jeans and all that. Then he goes in on Alfamega. He also isn't fond of people pretending to be drug dealers and gangsters to sell records. Then he handles Alfamega in a classy way. Stating "I promised I would put you on point, I’m disappointed in you, dog, you ain't hold it down at all, but I ain't going at your jaw, just going to show you how to ball." That's it. That's why it hurts. T.I. is like The Game in the sense that he will beef with anyone and all he needs is a reason. Alfamega got T.I. locked up and that's all he gets. He's not even mad. He's just disappointed and sometimes that is the worst feeling you can have. He's not going to give Alfamega the time of day. He's sad that he made Alfamega the point guard of Grand Hustle, the one calling the plays and Alfamega flipped on him. He's not going to diss him, he's just going to force Alfamega to watch him ball. In the second verse he states "I ain’t mad I forgive them, God I know they ain't mean it," T.I is a bigger man than me.

However he is mad at 50 Cent and makes that clear in the second verse with references to 50's first album, because that's the only one that really matters. He starts his attack on 50 with "Yeah I seen it all before, hate I'm popping and they ain't," because let's be real 50 said T.I. wouldn't make it an T.I is still selling very well but what about G-Unit? They didn't even have a record deal or Young Buck when "You So Tough" came out. T.I. made it much longer than 50 and G-Unit. He continues with "Ain't that lame, but then that hatred manifest to pure malice," well it is lame 50. 50 isn't anywhere near as big as he once was in the rap game but he's still trying to beef with ANYONE who will go against. Game offered to squash the beef and even gave 50 a shoutout as being one of the more important rappers in history, then pitched a G-Unit reunion only for 50 Cent to call him a bitch and start dissing again. Then he got G-Unit together again without Game and kept dissing. Game simply stated "G-Unit had a reunion, fuck you niggas" that was it and 50 can't get anymore responses. Not even Game cares anymore, and Game loves beef. Rick Ross isn't entertaining 50 anymore. All of these rappers 50 dissed and none of them will even give him the time of day anymore while he's still dissing. It is pure malice at this point 50 and everyone knows it.

T.I. states "Won’t be satisfied until somebody dies and I'm patiently waiting on it, me and the reaper on a first name basis now." 50 won't be done with beef until he or someone else gets killed. T.I. lost his best friend Philant and while he was in jail he had time to reflect, that's it. He stated  He's done with beef. "Patiently Waiting" was one of the bigger hits from 50s past and of course Get Rich or Die Tryin was the album so it's clever wordplay. He states he's on the first name basis with the grim reaper because "Most of that shit, look back, just laugh, some shit still look back get sad, maybe my homeboy still be around had I not hit the nigga in the mouth that time, I won that fight, I lost that war." T.I. is just patiently waiting on 50 to grow up.

T.I. states that he could beef with 50 and eviscerate the career he has left like Lil Flip or Shawty Lo but no instead "I’m a let you make it now, stay totally out the way for you." Say whatever you want 50 it doesn't matter. You're childish. He ends his attack on 50 with "Hating in your blood, Cuz. Yes, it’s just too late for you, all I could do is pray for you or organize a wake for you." That's it. He's gonna pray for 50. This is an important diss track because it's not so much an attack as it is a lecture that put two grown men in their places and made them stop mentioning him. T.I. just put you in time out and gave you a stern talking to like your dad. 50 finally stopped mentioning T.I. but he didn't take it to heart.
