Craig Robinson Interview

We recently had the opportunity to sit down with actor, comedian and singer Craig Robinson to discuss starring in Hot Tub Time Machine 2 as well as his career in general. Hot Tub Time Machine 2 is the sequel to the original film from 2010. This time the crew heads into the future to protect the past that they created. It's filled with all of the comedy and shenanigans that the first was known for. It'll be in theaters February 20th.

When asked about going back in time: Craig instantly knew where he'd go. He wanted to go back to the original Soul Train. He'd be a dancer and rename the Soul Train Line the Robinson line. It was kind of surprising he knew the answer right away, but it was definitely a great answer.

When asked about his favorite part filming the sequel: His favorite part is the friendship and chemistry that's shared between the actors. He also enjoyed being able to create a completely new film while still tipping the hat to the original and everything it did.

His favorite part of filming: Almost every scene has elements of improv. The actors mesh well so they're able to create moments that everyone can relate to because they do it with their friends. Whether it's breaking out in song spontaneously or just making fun of each other

His favorite scenes: His favorite scenes was Choozy Doozy which was improvised in it's entirety. You can check out a preview of the scene directly below.

The pressure of doing a sequel: The just wanted to do it right. Originally there was going to be a straight to DVD sequel that didn't include any of the original actors or the writer Josh Heald. They just wanted to make sure it came off perfect.

Working with Adam Scott: Adam is an awesome guy who "spaces out" before a scene then just transitions perfectly and it's amazing to watch. Crispen Glover was the opposite and extremely dedicated to staying in character throughout the filming process. Craig expressed interest in watching how the two approached acting differently.

Explaining time skip in films: The film starts off with an interview that fills us in on everything that happened. It'll also be the jumping off point for the films plot.

Did he relate to Nick: As soon as people find out that he sings they always want him to sing in movies. Out of all the characters he's played he relates to Nick most of all but considers himself to be much more reserved.

If he would play a villain: He got to play the Antichrist in Rapture-Palooza. Playing the villain is fun and anyone who says otherwise is a liar. He had fun playing as the villain. If he chooses to play the villain he has to win. Nobody wants to be a loser and a villain.

How he approaches different roles: He always preps by doing research. Then he just tries to keep it real and behave like the character would. Whether it's a fictional character like Nick or a real person like Maceo Parker in Get On Up.

If he enjoys comedy movies: He's a fan of the genre because it's a "breeding ground" of comedy and allows for free range of emotion. He stressed that society tells men that they shouldn't be emotional but comedy films allows him to show every aspect of emotion from sadness to joy. Being able to express himself so many different ways is why he loves the genre so much. - fan of genre breeding ground free range feeling fun okay to show

Was there a moment he realized he was famous: He sometimes wrestles with the idea of being famous. He still considers himself a school teacher. Sometimes it's a little weird for him going to the corner store and being recognized or being stopped by paparazzi. He states that he started gaining fame at an older age than most so he never had to adjust at a young age. He likes do dwell in his "Scorpio loneliness, but not in a depressing." At the same time he really enjoys the perks of being famous.

Hot Tub Time Machine 2 will be in theaters February 20th so make sure to check it out.
