Black Superhero: Night Thrasher

Night Thrasher: Dwayne Taylor

Why did Dwyane Wade's mother spell his name like that? Luckily Dwayne Taylor didn't have to deal with that. Dwayne was from a wealthy family however his parents were murdered by criminals. Unlike Batman he wasn't there to watch. He was adopted by Andrew Chord. Chord is a former mercenary. He had children with a woman named Miyami he met in Vietnam. He fell in love with her. She didn't want to be trapped by her tribe and died alongside their twins. Chord retired in heartbreak. When Dwayne's parents were killed Chord adopted him and took over their Taylor Foundation. The Taylor Foundation was a billion dollar company that provided money to back charitable causes. Chord raised Dwayne with the help of an old Asian Lady named Tai. Unlike Batman he wasn't concerned with finding his parents killers. He just forgot how they died but he did have a strong sense of justice. He convinced Chord to create a state of the art headquarters for him with money from the Taylor Foundation. Then he hired various martial arts and weapons masters to train him in their styles. Thus, Night Thrasher was born.

On Dwayne's first outing he met Silhouette and Midnight's Fire. The two would become his allies. However on one outing they were taking down a gang in a warehouse (why do comic book gangs always meet in warehouses) when the police arrived. The police shot at everyone superhero costume or not. Silhouette was wounded in the gunfire. Dwayne and Midnight's fire got her to safety. However she played dead and Dwayne left in heartbreak while Midnight's Fire swore revenge on Dwayne. Silhouette wasn't actually dead but she was paralyzed. She faked her death because she had started a relationship with Dwayne and didn't want him spending his life taking care of her.

Dwayne took the time to develop a better costume that would provide more protection. He also liked the idea of The Fantastic 4 so he decided he would recruit his own Fantastic 4. He would play the role of Mr. Fantastic. Nova was having issues with his powers so Dwayne kidnapped him, then through him off a building. This scared him enough to reactivate his powers. Nova didn't trust Dwayne but he had his powers back so he joined the team. He got Marvel Boy to play Invisible Woman and Firestar to be Human Tourch. The team didn't even have a name.

They went up against Terrax in New York. They won but The Avengers, who were late, showed up and took all the credit. The team named themselves The New Warriors. This is when everything started going bad for Dwayne. He was framed for killing to police officers by Midnight's Fire. He managed to defeat fire. That's when he learned Silhouette was still alive, just in a wheelchair. She turned Midnight's Fire into the police and joined The New Warriors in an Oracle type role.

Dwayne met and befriended Rage. Rage was on trial for murder (he did it but they killed his grandmother first). Rage was revealed to be a troubled teenager and nobody wanted anything to do with him. He was Avenger and nobody would vouch for him (I'm really starting to think The Avengers are racist). Dwayne stepped in and lied to the courts. He provided Rage with an alibi. After rage was acquitted Dwayne adopted him as a foster child but told everyone it was his little brother. Rage even switched his costume colors to match Night Thrasher. Everything was looking up, but like I said, it got worse before it got better.

Dwayne realized the Taylor foundation was funding A.I.M. after The New Warriors defeated them. He looked deeper and realized they were also funding several gangs, a Russian Mob and the Japanese Yakuza. He wanted to make a deal with the Yakuza to tell him who was funding them inside the corporation. The New Warriors didn't like this. So Dwayne acted like Ice Cube and dropped N.W.A. but still didn't get answers.

He was approached by The Folding Circle which was a team of villains. If he joined they'd help him find out everything that was a mystery. He agreed but secretly plotted to take them down from the inside. Sadly, this was a group of villains that kept their promise. They showed Dwayne the convoluted past with expert testimony, witness statements, evidence and a confession. Here's what happened.

Dwayne's father Daryl served in Vietnam with Chord. We know this. Cord however didn't fall in love with a woman from a tribe. Their platoon of 5 was offered the chance to rule the world. All they had to do was have children with 5 women of a cult. Everyone accepted except Dwayne's father Daryl. Chord thought the woman who birthed his children had died. She did indeed fake her death but it was to flee the cult. Chord had an altered version of the events because the cult altered his mind. The children lived and were actually Midnight's Fire and Silhouette, but he had no idea. Chord had been funneling money to those evil organizations due to his mind being controlled by a member of the cult.

But it gets worse. When the platoon returned to the states Chord remained in touch with Daryl because they were best friends. The cult tracked them. For revenge they controlled Chord's mind and forced him to kill Daryl and his wife in front of Dwayne as the family ate in a restaurant. Dwayne and Chord's minds were altered and they had no memory of this. Who was the member of the cult who did all of this. The old Asian Lady Tai. What did she say when asked about it? "You should have stayed out of my business." She caught Dwayne, Chord and The Folding Circle off guard and escaped to Japan. Dwayne and The Folding Circle followed her and Dwayne alerted The New Warriors since he had been anonymously feeding them information. Chord was left in New York knowing he had killed his best friend. So he shot himself in the head. In Japan Tai was defeated, Dwayne rejoined The Warriors and allowed The Folding Circle to go, as a thanks.

Afterwards Dwayne retired from his role as Night Thrasher. He felt that he could make a bigger difference by devoting himself to the Taylor Foundation. He moved to Seattle and occasionally watched the teams exploits. He still came out of retirement on occasion just for the thrill. He should have stayed in the board room.

Zachary Smith worked for The Taylor Foundation as a scientist. He had created a cure for cancer . Then everyone learned it was just his son's mutant powers. The Foundation's stock to serious hit and Zach went on the run, and abandoned his son. Dwayne adopted Zach's son who is now the mutant Microbe. To save the company The New Warriors became a reality TV show.

The ratings started off strong but they started to dip. The team decided to take on a group of real villains like they used too. They were hoping this would boost the ratings. The team found a group of villains in Connecticut and got ready for war. Sadly reality TV had dulled their skills. During the fight Nitro caught everyone off guard by using his powers to cause a huge explosion. Dwayne, The New Warriors, all the other villains, the TV crew and several blocks of civilians were all killed. This event helped start the Marvel Civil War. Dwayne did not go silently in the dark. He went thrashing.
