Ah from the 4th book, my favorite one |
Hi guys and gals it's Jaz. It's been awhile hasn't it? Well because it has been so long I want to bring to your attention something I personally thought about one of my favorite graphic novel series movie adaptation. Scott Pilgrim VS The World should have cast Drake Bell as Scott instead of Micheal Cera. Now for those of you that aren't familiar with Scott Pilgrim (which is crazy because it's just awesome, I'm going to give you a little knowledge on the series. Scott Pilgrim is a series of graphic stories by Bryan Lee O'Malley. It consists of six digest size black-and-white volumes, released between August 2004 and July 2010. The series follows the life and times of 23 year old Canadian, Scott Pilgrim. He begins to date this girl named Ramona Flowers and in order to date he has to defeat her 7 evil exes. It's an awesome story that eventually became adapted into a film, casting Micheal Cera as Scott....eh they could of done better by casting Drake Bell. Lets break down why into some categories.
The Look:
Drake, Micheal and Scott |
With these pictures side by side, while Bell isn't the spitting image of Scott (also take in the fact that the graphic novel has the characters lightly chibified in appearance). Reading the series you can kinda see how his stature, height and hair mimic Scott is a slacker bass player that just wears graphic tees, the kind you'd get at Walmart for like a few dollars. Drake just looks like that guy, the slacker early 20's bass player. Micheal Cera eh not so much. I mean sure he's in the clothes for the movie but that just don't seem like his natural style. Micheal Cera's attire in Superbad seems to just look more natural in my opinion. Plus Drake had the hair for it by default. I don't even think that Cera has the hair for it, I mean sure that was all his hair aside from the sideburns but it just, looks awkward. Honestly is it because Micheal Cera and Scott are both Canadian? Is that it?
Acting:
Okay while I am not trying to take shots at Micheal Cera's acting career because he did play some roles that in my own opinion were made for him. I just don't think Micheal Cera can really play any role besides awkward teenager that well. Scott is a douche, yes he is a douche. He is forgetful, naive and a slacker. He also has some womanizer tendencies such as getting over breakups surprisingly fast and has a new girlfriend rather quickly. He considers himself to be a paragon of virtue and blame all the problems of the relationship he is in on the girl and suppressing his own flaws. By the series end he understands his flaws and grows as a person. In the movie, Cera just isn't douchey enough, he just doesn't sell it well and by the movies end you're just like..."he wasn't really that much of a douche, where is the growth?" Now take Drake Bell on the other hand. Could the director of the series just sat down and watched some episodes of Drake and Josh? Tell me that he doesn't literally play a naive douche that doesn't generally see his own flaws well. Wouldn't it be a little more believable that he actually learned his lesson. As I said before, I am not trying to bag on Micheal Cera in any shape or form. He is a respectable actor and I liked his work but he just seems like he's better at playing the awkward role ( the role that comes to mind hearing his name) and awkward just isn't enough to play the roll of Scott he's not that awkward, he is but not overflowing with it like Cera.
He's perfect for the awkward parts |
But I could actually believe he gets chicks |
Miscellaneous:
Alright I am really trying to sell my point here, and we got really the two big things out of the way. So let me throw things together to get you to see what I am talking about. Okay, do you have a copy of Scott Pilgrim handy or a torrent of it on your computer? Okay good now I want you to read it but using Micheal Cera's voice as Scott, just read a couple of pages. Okay now I want you to watch a clip of Drake and Josh with mainly Drake is talking, Look it up on Youtube it's there. Now I want you to read the exact same thing but now that you have Drake's voice (not the rapper) in your head. See kinda fits more doesn't it? Now I know that Micheal Cera has more movies under his belt and would attract people to the movie because of the name alone. I get that, but honestly I think that this role for Drake Bell could have been a huge step forward for him, that one movie that he could of been well known for. I know Micheal Cera won an award for his performance but I'm going to be 110% honest with you guys sometimes the name alone is all you need in order to succeed. I just don't believe it was a part for him.
Conclusion:
I love me some Scott Pilgrim. Its one of my favorite graphic novel series that I have ever read. The movie Scott Pilgrim vs The World believe it or not from my arguments of Cera playing Scott is one of my favorite movies, I can watch it and say the lines of it like its my job. I'm just always going to feel that while I do like Micheal Cera as an actor and I don't have really anything against him, I just always going to feel that Drake Bell could have been a better Scott Pilgrim. That is all for today folks. Its also been brought to my attention about someone that could have possibly gave Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Ramona Flowers) a run for her money? Eh, Eh?
Hmm I wonder..maybe. |
Are you my lost brother or something? I said the same exact thing (although a bit less kindly) about Bell instead of Cera as Scott Pilgrim the second I read Cera was cast for the part, Drake Bell has been playing Scott Pilgrim for years in Drake & Josh, Bell has the right attitude and real life music skills to play instruments and years of emulating the personality of Scott Pilgrim, how could the producers not see that is just beyond me. Amazingly great graphic novel (one of my favorites too) is a shame the movie adaptation was somewhat less than that due to bad casting (Zoey Deutch could also make a better Ramona Flowers). Anyways, thanks I though I was the only one thinking that.
