Toonami and Akira

Toonami has announced a month of movies. Now, the one that really peaks my interest is AKIRA. Akira is one of the most, or possibly the most, popular anime movie of all time and it's airing Saturday on Toonami.

Akira just released it's 25th Anniversary Blu-Ray/DVD Combo Pack last month. This time it was from our friends FUNimation, who by looking at all the shows on Toonami, really loves Toonami a lot. Also, from the looks of it, this was probably a last minute deal. Reason I say this is because when Toonami was announcing their movies for December, they only announced three, which we now know are Summer Wars, Fullmetal Alchemist: The Conquer of Shamballa, and Trigun: Badland Rumbles. There was no talk of a fourth movie, until two weeks ago, when they announced Akira is also going to air, giving them a total of four movies. This is my theory that Akira was a last minute deal, but then again, we'll never know.

Akira is a movie that's going to be hard to air compared to the other three. There has to be lots of edits, cuts, and censoring. This movie can be described in one word- VIOLENT. As with Deadman Wonderland (as of Adult Swim Toonami) it was edited. You could also say Sword Art Online with the bleeps, but let's not get off topic. Akira has to be heavily edited. There's lots of scenes where people are flat out murdered, and weird violent shit happens out of nowhere. Plus, there's plenty of nude scenes in this movie. I won't spoil this movie for anyone who hasn't seen it, but believe me when I say it is one of the most violent anime that I have ever seen.

If Toonami can pull this off, I will praise them. This is one of their hardest challenges yet. I don't know if FUNimation is going to give them an edited version. I really hope not. I want to see what Williams Street can do with this movie. The promo that they released Saturday night was really amazing. Everything was perfect. The music, the scenes, just the way they did everything. Perfect. This is probably their best movie promo right next to the Evangelion 2.22 movie promo. And if you noticed something closely, they didn't use any Toonami music. They used music from Akira's soundtrack. The only other show that I can think that they did the same thing is Cowboy Bebop. To hear music from this soundtrack, kind of put a cherry on top of this perfect promo. There were no flaws in this.

For being a movie from the late 80s, I think it will fit in well with Toonami. We already had Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim Toonami, and that show is from the late 90s. So to me, being 10 years off, isn't really a big deal even though people might argue it would be. And Akira's animation doesn't look as it is from 1988. I think people will love it. With promos of this movie airing on Adult Swim Comedy, I don't see why people would hate this movie. Even if you're not an anime fan, you will enjoy this movie. If you never seen Akira, please do so this Saturday. It is iconic, and there are many references from that movie that are still being used today.

Akira will please, and will have you on the edge of your seat for more. It has lots of action, and it will not disappoint you, and if it does, you'll keep watching until you like it.

Watch Akira Saturday, December 7th, 2013 on Toonami, only from Adult Swim.
