Gantz is a train wreck. You don't look away. It's a sexually frustrated train wreck that leads to a sticky puddle that you crawl out of feeling dirty after thinking about it. I finished every chapter of Gantz and I can honestly say, there's nothing good about it. Sure it has it's good qualities, but they're get covered in the sticky goo of disgust that effects everything else in Gantz. Let's just talk about it.
Gantz, has a lot of sex scenes. I mean its a ton of sex scenes and sex is a big part of this manga. Early on the main character complains that he doesn't feel like a man because he's a virgin. This was the only thing on his mind. At one point he considers raping a girl but thankfully he feels bad about it. Seriously he keeps talking about sex, it's ridiculous. I've never thought about sex this much in my life. But here's the kicker. In the end it's revealed that the only people who aren't virgins are the main character, the two women he's slept with, a ginger kid, a woman who has a child, the women that were raped (I'll get to it), an old widower and his parents. There's a 27 year old international fighting champ in the story whose a virgin. This wasn't revealed until the last arc. Finally all the complaining about not having sex or not having enough sex paid off, but not really because it didn't help in the ass beating he took a few chapters later.
The story actually could have been nice but it got ruined by all the sex. It revolves around people who died getting a second chance at life by playing a game to kill aliens. It's revealed the aliens are actually real and if you die in the game you're dead for real this time. Eventually it becomes more than a game and the aliens lead a full scale invasion. But again, I don't read for sex. What do I look like? A middle aged women's book club that has potluck dinners and drink a lot? Because I assure I don't. It had it's good points but here's a few reasons why it got screwed up. The ability to revive dead people was added half way through, 3/4 of the way through it was added you can revive people that died outside the game as well. It was said once you were freed from the game you couldn't come back. People came back. There were vampires, they attacked for a story arc then two decided they didn't care and the others just vanished. Kurono is the main character, he's forgettable. He has a brother, he's a vampire. He vanishes with the other vampires as fast as he appeared.
Now I complained about the sex a lot, but to the credit of Hiroya Oku he tried to go straight and dropped the sex for about 40 chapters. It was nice and the story was becoming coherent. People were getting back stories, loose ends were being tied up. But, I guess the sales weren't as high so he had to bring the sex back. He really brought it back in a horrible way. There's a man who rapes alien women before killing them. There's an alien man who rapes an human man. A 13 year old boy tries to rape an 18 year old girl. The victory party includes a interspecies orgy. No matter how good the story was without all the sex he couldn't stay away from it. There's actually no real ending to the story. It's "These people lived, the end."
The only reason I bothered to read Gantz is because I was on winter break, and I finished it in 3 days because it's a quick read. It's got over 300 chapters but it's a quick read because there's no words in sex scenes and there's a lot of sex scenes. Some entire chapters are just sex scenes. Gantz is a train wreck you don't look away from, not because you can't, but because you're not doing anything else.
