The other day I was scrolling down Twitter and a fierce debate was going on. The topic, there are no bad video games. There are only games that aren't for you. I thought about it for a while and it made sense. Five Nights at Freddy's isn't a bad game. It's just not a game for me. Same goes for Final Fantasy as a whole. But then I thought a little, harder. That is just wrong. There are indeed bad games.
You might expect me to say something recent like Dream Daddy, or No Man's Sky. No, I won't do it. I want you go back to young bright eyed Darrell, with eyes full of hope for the future. Mercenaries 2 was one of the reasons that light was snuffed out. I believe in constructive criticism and never tearing down another person's work as long as they were passionate about it and put care into it. Except Mercenaries 2, fuck that game, and if you worked on it you should feel bad.
Month after month Gameinformer would provide new information on this game and it kept getting pushed back. The reason was "we're adding more cool shit." I believed it. I was hype for it. The trailer was hilarious to watch and it made a younger me crack up at the song.
But then I played the actual game. I was so pissed off, I paid full price for that shit. Sure, it was an open world game where a lot of stuff could be destroyed. But everything? Oh no, not at all. On top of that all the pedestrians just kept saying the same things over and over again. The controls were horrible. Everything was glitchy. The vehicles were supposed to be a big part of the game and they moved like crap. I'm getting mad just thinking about it.
This is the worst game I ever played and I've played some shitty games. I bought both Prototype games at full price and enjoyed them, I'm looking for a sequel. Some people would describe the Saits Row series as horrible, and I love every one of those games. Volition stop hurting me. I love Mass Effect: Andromeda and I'm gonna play it again. But Mercenaries 2 that's a game that left a bad taste in my mouth, even all these years later.
