Tenjo Tenge Omnibus Volume 1 Review: It's, THE KNUCKLE BOMBS

Omnibus Version including Volumes 1-2, Chapters 1-12

So the story stars our young and naive heroes Bob Makihara and Soichiro Nagi. They’re first years in high school rolling up to Todo Academy ready to whoop ass on site. And that’s what they did. They destroyed the Third Year’s room before school could start. It got so bad Maya Natsume and Masataka Takayanagi of the Juken Club had to come stop them. So then, Maya knocks Nagi out of the window into the Juken CLub bathroom where her younger sister Aya is washing. Nagi flies right into her crotch. What a way to start the series.

Aya falls in love with Nagi at first sight and after a month of the Knuckle Bombs rampaging through school, Aya has been following Nagi trying to make him her husband. Now, I’ve watched the anime before I read the manga and even there I thought it was chesey. The author tries to make us believe Aya genuinely has feelings for Nagi for legitimate reasons like fate and the fact that Aya has the Dragon Eyes that allow her to see into the past and future. At the end of the day, she only likes him for plot reasons.

Before all the real savages in the story show up, Nagi picks a fight with Takayanagi who, in the anime, mauled this man. In the manga it wasn’t as bad but that L he took was solid here. Using the box lunch as a shield was hilarious even though it low key worked. While recovering from his L, Nagi kicks it at Bob’s girl Chiaki’s house. We are not going to mention that Bob was having sex fully clothed. So Chiaki goes to the laundromat and the Executive Student Council decides to take action or Punishment, against the duo for their crimes. This creep Ryuzaki not only blew up Bob’s bike, but he raped his girlfriend. That hurt my heart. Bob, Nagi and Aya showed up to take another L which leads to Bob and Nagi joining the Juken Club.

Chiaki tried to make light of the situation of being raped by saying she didn’t let Ryuzaki all the way in and he came in seconds but there is no coming back from that. I feel bad for Bob. He has to kill Ryuzaki, that’s the only revenge, or getting with his mother. Ryuzaki is just a straight up creep. Who watched porn in the school auditorium on the big screen? I’m happy Saga Mask hit him with the ultimate German suplex later in the series.

From this point on after Nagi and Bob join the Juken Club, we are introduced to other members of the Executive Student Council and glimpse of the plot going further as well as hints of what happened in the past. So far we know of Ryuzaki, Saga Mask, Emi Isuzu, and Tagami who is creepy looking. I watched the anime so I know , for the most part, what’s happening next. The fights so far have been good but this series continues to turn up.

This manga is very fast paced compared to the anime. The fights in the anime were sequenced better. I don’t really care for Aya’s because she’s annoying. I enjoy the other characters. The plot is quite simple but you can tell the fights and characters are going to drive the story. I don’t like how Aya keeps having all these damn inner monologues. Also, Takayanagi pretty much gave the series away when he said “The strongest two members of the Juken Club crossed the threshold that day”. We know Bob and Nagi are going to have crazy strength and all but damn. This pretty much takes away a bit of good storytelling going forward.

Like I said, I watched the anime so this was just a recap for me. I thought it was a good volume with some highlights. It has its low points but nothing to deter you away from the series. The nudity is fine with me only because I rather have full frontal nudity or sex in certain places compared to an overload of basically soft core porn. Good read and the series only turns up from here on out. Let me leave you with a question. Now that we know Isuzu’s true form, would you still try to hit?
