Flame of Recca Volume 23 Review: The God Father and The Phoenix

Chapters  218-227

What seemed like it would be a lowkey volume, it was actually full of great insight into character as well as story. Recca decides to head to see Resshin to conquer his flame as he gives the gang 3 days to decide whether they would follow him to the final showdown against the other Uruha's and Koran. During this time Kaoru fights some random thugs and Domon finds out a loli like him. Unlike them others were having a more successful 3 days. Fuuko trains with Raiha and gains the heart of Fujin from Him. I'm honestly surprised he had the heart. He was using his own energy to suppress the evil that is Raijin so who knows what's going to happen in his upcoming fight.

Now we transition to the opposing teams. Neon decides to fight again using Jisho's swords. She doesn't have her madogu anymore so it will be cool to see her dual wield swords. We get a glimpse into what is happening in the Koran manner. Koran may be having sex with Renge and that is creepy as hell. This man, I don't know how, but continues to grow more and more disgusting. Aoi is about to release Tokiya's master Meguri Kyoza who has an immense power that scares Uruha even though his chained up.

Fast forward to Recca. I honestly didn't expect Resshin to actually be Ouka, Recca's father. I was thinking of Resshin as some other flame wielder but to see its Ouka is pretty cool. I get eh feeling that he may be saved as well as Kagero and may be they can become a couple again. Hopefully but it looks slim as I don't see how a flame wielder can come back to life, although maybe the combined powers of Yaagi and Koran could possibly do that. But Ouka drops a bomb on us. Each Flame wielder can have a unique number of flames but Kurei has an unlimited number of flames because he has the Phoenix flame inside him. Now we didn't get much clarification on that but just from prior knowledge, maybe his Phoenix flame can house an unlimited number of flames because the Phoenix can never truly die.

I can't wait to see just how far Kurei's powers will go. Now my only concern with the upcoming battles is who fights who but more importantly, will these fights be good? So far only Fuuko and Tokiya's fights have been great. Recca has that one bout against Kurei but that's it. Hopefully we get an all out battle with technical points instead of "I take this hit but it will help me power to beat you in one hit". As I said earlier, except for Kurei and even Koran now, no one in this series is truly strong. People win by plot and not strength. Hopefully things turn around and we get great bouts. I want Fuuko vs Raiha vs Aoi while Tokiya faces Kyoza. I honestly don't care who fights who after that.

I thought this was a great volume. What lacked in fights was made up in good story telling and character interactions. So far, this last battle seems like a last battle.
