Recently Lil Wayne got on stage and promised The Carter V was coming. It's not like he hasn't done this before. However, this is the first time in his life that he's free from Birdman's grip. Maybe it really will drop. It probably won't. It's one of those albums that is going to be promoted by the artist for a long time and never drop. That got me thinking, what are some other albums that were promised, never scrapped but never released.
1. Lil Wayne - The Carter V:
Lil Wayne has once again announced the release of his album The Carter V. People are excited because now he's no longer on Cash Money so the album will come out surely. Well, it won't. Wayne's been announcing this album for what seems to be forever and it's getting no closer. Sure Birdman has the original Carter V locked in a vault somewhere and refuses to release it unless Lil Wayne comes back. Birdman is never releasing that album so even if he does drop a Carter V it won't be the real Carter V it'll be a bunch of new tracks he recorded. Personally I don't care if we ever get the album because I'm still waiting on Rebirth 2. There, I said it.
2. Dr. Dre - Detox:
At one point I was excited for this happening, but that was a decade ago, and I was still in high school. It's going to sound crazy, but I really don't care for Dr. Dre these days. When is the last time he produced something crazy good? Rappers he used to produce for consistently barely let him touch their recent albums, if they do at all. On Game's most recent albums Dre has produced nothing, same goes for Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and others. The last major artist he produced for was T.I. and the song "Dope" and it didn't even make the album. We live in a world where Dr. Dre produced tracks can't even make it to the album now. You don't want Detox.
Since I was 14 and anticipating this album, I've also learned Dr. Dre is a pretty bad person especially when it comes to women. I'm not talking misogyny in music, but choking and beating women, sometimes in a party full of people. There's also the fact that YG has never come to ask him for a track so Dr. Dre got on his high horse about it calling YG and other West Coast artist without his cosign the "ratchet movement," and stated they were destroying hip hop. So the fact that he's also a hater is just silly. Dre, you fell off.
3. Jay Electronica - Act II: Patents of Nobility:
This is the first album on the list that I really want. It's not that I think Jay Electronica is a great rapper. I think his features are either great or mediocre. I want this album because Jay Electronica has talked a lot of shit about other rappers, claiming to be better than them. Sure, I'll let you pass with the thought you're better than Drake because he just steals whatever is popular. But, Jay also goes at Kendrick for being fake deep, or his label mate J. Cole for being boring. But Jay Electronica, where the fuck is your album? How are you still relevant? I don't get it.
I need this Jay Electronica album. The way he's been talking about other artists being trash compared to him means this is gonna either be a great album or trash. But it's never coming, the man doesn't even put out singles. Every time I see a picture of him I see the ghosts of Jay Z and Diddy standing over him like "Where's the album?" It's been 7 years man. Maybe he's taking his time to produce all the tracks by himself like J. Cole. People say Jay is a great producer but the only track he really produced was Nas' "Queens Get The Money" and as someone who listens to that album at least once a week, it's the worst beat on the whole damn album. I'm gonna need Jay to turn those Twitter fingers into studio fingers or shut up about other rappers. Man put out one damn mixtape 7 years ago.
4. Andre 3000 - Untitled
People often overlook Big Boi and go straight to saying that Andre is the best rapper in Outkast. Nah, not today he's not. I've said it before and I'll keep saying it. Don't even try to put Andre in your top 5 solo rappers until he drops and album, mixtape or something. Y'all praising this man as a solo artist for doing five features a year. Where's the album Andre? I'd put you in the same box as Jay Electronica if you didn't have the Outkast discography showing you actually could rap. But, until you release that solo album we're not having discussions about you being top 5 solo. Top 5 as a duo yeah, but not solo.
5. B.o.B's Rock Album - Untitled:
Nobody cares what B,o.B does now because he dropped a whole mixtape about why the Earth is flat. Nobody has really cared about B.o.B since Underground Luxury. But, back when people still cared he dropped the album Strange Clouds. On that album was the song "Ray Bands," in which he stated "After Strange Clouds, I'ma drop my rock album," that was 5 years ago Bobby. I'm tired of waiting, I used to like you, what happened? I don't have time for this flat Earth shit. Get your damn guitar out the attic and go to work. These rappers gonna quit playing with rock music.
