RWBY

RWBY is an anime influenced web series created by Monty Oum, written by Miles Luna, and Kerry Shawcross. The musical soundtrack is mostly done by Jeff Williams and Casey Lee. The series went viral after the first episode aired on the Rooster Teeth website on the 18th of July, 2013. The series currently has four seasons called volumes and the fifth volume is on the way. Series creator Monty Oum passed away on February 1st, 2015 due to falling into a coma caused by a medical allergic reaction. But despite this unfortunate event taking place, the series continued.

RWBY takes place in the World of Remnant at a school called Beacon. Beacon is an academy that trains “Hunters” and “Huntresses” who fight the “Creatures of Grimm” in order to keep the peace. The story is about four girls: Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna and Yang Xiao Long’s journey as Huntresses in training. Alongside them are other students they are close with also going through similar trials and tribulations of being enrolled at Beacon. The four girls’ first letter in their name represent a colour and the first letter of each name is taken in order to create their team name: RWBY (pronounced Ruby).

Each character has unique weapons and abilities. The characters have customizable weapons that act as bludgeoning weapons, weapons that slice and almost every single weapon is also, a gun. The weapons are extremely awesome and creative. For example, Ruby’s weapon called Crescent Rose, is a high-caliber sniper-scythe. It’s a scythe and sniper rifle. Yang’s weapons, Ember Cecelia are dual-ranged shotgun-gauntlets. Getting to see the different weapons in the heat of battle is exhilarating as it is epic. Abilities in this universe are called “Semblance”. An example of it is Shadow, Blake’s ability. This allows her to leave behind lifelike after images or clones while she fights.

It’s hard not to get attached to the characters in RWBY right away. They have a way of drawing the viewers in and making you care about them rather quickly. The cast is a lively bunch that won’t fail to make you smile or laugh. The names are cleverly assigned and the character designs are original. The cast of RWBY have some cool looking clothes, weapons, hair and armor that have inspired cosplayers a many. The interpersonal relationships between the characters is wonderful and the dialogue between them is hilarious.

The web-series is often criticized for two things. The overall animation and plot. Admittedly, the plot seems to be the story element that the creators put on the back burner, but it’s not bad and it is present. The series is driven by the action and characters. The 3D animation is reminiscent of a video game. I personally found it to be refreshing because it’s got its own look. The animation allows for crazy, over the top, fluid and crisp action sequences. The fights are superbly well choreographed and the use of the weapons are clever and intense. It’s truly a treat to watch some of the team combinations team RWBY uses to combat foes.

RWBY episodes range from approximately  5 to 20 minutes. and the entire series so far is binge watchable, it's not too lengthy. So it’s not that long or time consuming. I urge you to give the web-series a fair chance by watching it on Rooster Teeth’s website or RT’s Youtube channel (it's on Crunchyroll and Netflix as well I believe). Start by watching the trailers for Red, White, Black and then Yellow (in that order) before watching episode one. I hope you’re combat ready!
