5 Centimeters Per Second Manga Review

5 Centimeters Per Second is a story about two children who have always lived a relatively solace life until they meet each other. From there they grow into a pair who eventually split but try to reconnect while finding themselves. The manga form is the adaptation as the animated movie by the same name. If you have not watched the original anime do so because it was amazing and I did a review of it here.

The manga is sort of a poor man's version of the original content. It takes the back bone of the story and poorly recreates the body while adding in so many extra scenes that don't make or break the story. It actually made it boring to me. Going into this I just imagined that it was the movie but in manga form. I was expecting artwork to compliment the story which was there. The artwork is good and it compliments the original content. I love the way the characters are drawn as well as the feel of it. This seems to be the only redeeming qualities of this manga.

In the movie Akari and Takaki have a very strong bond as they are one in the same and it shows throughout the entire series until the very end. No worries there are no spoilers in this review. Reading the manga I did not feel the bond between the two characters. The beginning of the manga was very rushed and it once it started to slow down it made Takaki seem extremely boring. Akari had moved away so she wasn't physically in the picture. I did not feel the connections between the characters like in the Movie.

The story moves on to introduce Kanae into the story who has a crush on Takaki but he's too busy writing texts to Akari. The manga went to lengths to make Kanae a credible character as wells as Takaki's girlfriend later on in the series which is another thing that went wrong.Kanae isn't a bad character but you know that she won't be getting with Takaki.

The movie when we see Adult Akari and Takaki the movie is about to end but the manga made a arc before where the movie ends but it doesn't do much for me as the beginning of the manga was rushed. I would not have minded a more flushed out story of the adult characters but the rushed beginning killed that.

Now I watched the movie before the manga, which everyone should do, so my analysis is a bit harsh for the manga. It doesn't do anything to help improve onto the movie. It is basically just a poor man's version of it. This could all just be the way that I take it not everyone but the movie is no doubt superior. I rate this manga a 6/10 and I don't recommend it to anyone but I do recommend the movie, as it moved my heart and my brain. The manga just doesn't encourage you to feel and think deeply about relationships like the movie did.
