Movie Review: 5 Centimeters Per Second

Warning! This review contains lots of spoilers. I recommend that you watch the movie first before reading this if you don't want to be spoiled. If you wan to read and watch later or just read than go ahead.  You can find this movie on any anime streaming site in English sub or dub. I recommend the sub for once.

The story takes place in Japan and is centered around a boy named Takaki Tono who befriends a girl named Akari Shinohara. They become very close friends due to the fact that they both stay in during recess because of their seasonal allergies and other similar interest. This leads their classmates to believe that they are dating even though they are only in elementary school. Upon graduation from elementary school, Akari moves to the southern part of Japan because of her fathers work. This leads the two to slowly drift apart.

They stay in contact with emails letters but in all the relationship that they had built up starts to deteriorate. Takaki then learns that his family will soon move even farther away so he decides to go visit her one last time. He writes a letter with his feelings on it but it soon gets lost in the snow storm when he is on his way there via train station. It takes hours for him to even reach the train station in which he will meet Akari but when he gets there she is there waiting for him with a blanket and food. It has to be around 12 at midnight by the time he got there. They have their first kiss and talk all night in a shed until they fall asleep. In the morning he leaves and but they both realize that this will be the last time they see each other even though they promised to continue writing each other.

The story fast forwards to their third year in senior high. A girl in Takaki's class Kanae has fallen in love with him ever since they were in middle school. The problem is that she tries to interact with him and tell him her feelings but he is oblivious to her and is all ways texting some one. It turns out that he isn't even sending the messages to someone even though he is texting 24/7. He can't seem to send the messages he is writing and has dreams about Akari. Kanae decides to give up because she realizes that she could never give Takaki what he is longing for. I feel really bad for Kanae because she never had the chance to tell him how she feels. At the same time I could understand how Takaki feels being in this situation. Its really not fun at all.

The story fast forwards again and we see Takaki working as a computer programmer while Akari is about to marry another man. This is really heartbreaking when I was watching this. I could not believe she was actually getting married to some one else while Takaki was living out his days in misery. Fast forward again and they both are in the same city. They both walk past each other on some train tracks near a cherry blossom tree that they used to play at. At this time it is April. They recognize each other but by the time they turn around the train cuts off their view. Once the train passes only Takaki is there. He then smiles and continues to walk away.

At this point I am completely heart broken and crying.I tried to grasp the situation but I could not understand it. How could two people who were so close and shared so much just drift away without any say so? It was like they wanted to be together but they were to lazy or scared to continue their relationship. This just goes to show that no matter how much you and someone share, you could always drift apart by unknown circumstances. I give this movie a 7.9/10. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I can say for sure that this is one of my favorites.
