10 Webtoons Worth Reading

In my day to day online adventures, I frequently look for people reading, watching or playing exceptional things. Books I’ve never heard of, shows I’ve unaware of or games I’m not playing and should be. One of the things that surprises me is the lack of people aware of webtoons who are relatively active in the anime/manga community. I may bring up a title that is a Korean webcomic and they’ll be confused. So I thought maybe it was time to bring a little attention to them because they have some quality work that cannot be ignored any longer. Even you do know what they are maybe I can recommend something you haven't yet tried.

A webtoon is what South Koreans call manhwa (Korean manga) or comics that are published online. They tend to be weekly like manga and lots of them are in all color. That’s right, not black and white, completely colored. I thought I'd make a small list of ten webtoons you should all start reading. So without further ado, here they are:

10. Star Wars – I thought I’d start off with an easy one. Hong Jacga retells the Star Wars story in comic book form with a Korean perspective.

9. Cherry Boy that Girl – This one is about an overweight girl who ends up becoming thin, pretty and popular. It's a pretty generic romance story otherwise but done at a high level. Tons of drama, love, betrayal and such. By South Ant.

8. Girls of the Wilds – Written by Hun and drawn by Zhena, this is the tale of a poor, dumb, bullied kid who ends up in an all girls high-school full of Mixed Martial Art fighters. He deals with bullies, taking care of his family, training and love in this story.

7. God of Highschool – A tournament taking the strongest of high school students from all over the world and making them fight one another in order to get a wish granted. But it seem that there is more to this tournament that meets the eye…created by Yongje Park.

6. She is Young – Two Jias!? What kind of life would you have if the younger version of your longtime girlfriend suddenly came into your life? Written and drawn by Donggulgom, Js, She is Young is a mature romance story where the main character has to deal with two versions of his girlfriends while dealing with other real life drama. If you sleep with the younger version of your current girlfriend, is it cheating?

5. Annarasumanara – Do you believe in magic? Yun Ai wants to be a magician but she’s just a sad and extremely poor high school girl. At a fair she meets a magic man and she begins to follow her dreams into the world of magic. Drawn and written by Ilkwon Ha.

4. Lookism – This webtoon is created by Park Jae Toon. Park Hyung Suk lives miserably. Short, fat, unattractive, poor, weak, not smart and bullied. He leaves to reinvent himself and becomes the same loser. But one day he finds himself in a nice, tall, attractive body while his real body still exists. What in the world is going on here!?

3. Noblesse – Cadis Etrama di Raizel, a high ranking leader of a race of Nobles wakes up after sleeping for 820 years. The world is a completely different place and the rise of a powerful "human" organization called the Union has been causing trouble. Jeho Son and Kwangsu Lee’s story is one of Raizel and company trying to fight off the Union and discover the truth behind many secrets.

2. Drug Candy – Bullied at work, falling out of love with his wife and now cheating of his wife with a young employee at his job. Watch a once happy couple engage in adultery and exploring relationships outside their marriage. A mature webtoon. By Lee Hyun-Min.

1. Tower of God – “What do you desire? Money and wealth? Honor and pride? Authority and power? Revenge? Or something that transcend all of them? Whatever you desire- is in here.” – The official description for Tower of God. This narrative is made by SIU, watch 25^th Baam, an unchosen Tower irregular climb and fight his way up the Tower meeting new friends and enemies along the way.
