Seishun Pop is manga about a freshman boy who is just plain normal. There is nothing special about him at all. He lives a normal life listening to music, especially his favorite band Incest. But of course there is a twist to this. The main character Sakuta lives by himself as his father's work has him traveling the world. One day Sakuta and his friend go to a live concert for Incest and during the performance the lead singer steps off stage to hug him.
It turns out that the lead singer of Incest, Eve, is also Sakuta's older sister. When they were young their parents split and so did the kids. 10 years passed and she returned, but he has no memories of her and his mother besides the day they walked away. Immediately, the second chapter, Eve starts to live with him. Next door is Ami who is in middle school but is madly in love with Sakuta. At school there is a girl who likes Sakuta a lot. One of the band members Yukinari is in love with Eve. Do you see all the love connections?
Now with the setting of the story complete, I'm going to hop right into the review. Artwork is pretty good. Its clean and legible. All of the characters and scenery are drawn well and each character has their own bodily characteristics. There aren't any scenes were I had to look twice in order to get the picture. It doesn't go above and beyond because its just a slice of life story.
The actual story of Seishun Pop is weird. There are no special gimmicks or tricks with it but it doesn't have a clear plan and I can tell that it was rushed, possibly because it got cancelled. The story isn't bad but it is rushed in a lot of places. For instance, I do not feel the relationship between Sakuta and Eve is genuine. They are supposed to be siblings but the entire time they are billed to become a couple. This is an incest story but I don't have a problem with that. I do have a problem with their forced relationship between them whether it be the sibling or couple pairing.
Sakuta does get a girlfriend, Ayano, the girl who has a crush on him. Ayano and Sakuta begin to date midway through the series. I can believe what Ayano and Sakuta have. A lot of the stories subplots are relevant but not clear such as why Sakuta wears headphones even when he isn't listening to music and why he has the feeling he does towards his mother and sister. Like I said, a lot of the character relationships don't seem real.
There is more to the story besides the love triangle that is Sakuta, Ayano, and Eve. The band Incest signs with a big label but once they do certain things aren't as they seem and the band's relationship begins to deteriorate. This was honestly the most interesting part of the story and it didn't even concern the main two characters. Another aspect to the story would be Ayano and her mother being insane. Ayano's father died years ago but they still see him even though no one else can. Ayano on the other hand becomes a psycho girlfriend. At one point she leaves 116 voice messages for him and she does a lot way worse shit but I won't spoil it. It's not all bad for Sakuta though, he gets to have sex with her whenever he wants and each time it was drawn out and in the weirdest places. At least he hit though.
This story isn't all that bad. I would give it a 3/5. Its a little weird but is actually worth the read with all the interesting undertones and the plot twist towards the end. I wish this series was longer so that the relationships could have developed more. I really enjoyed the moments with his mother, I felt sad as hell reading it. I recommend this manga because its short and nice. Seishun Pop isn't the best but its fun.
