Mamamoo - Melting Album Review

Mamamoo have released their anticipated debut full length album and the world will never be the same. Mamamoo are known for their amazing vocals, Moonbyul's charismatic rapping and their distinct style of Funk and R&B. On the road to this album they released "I Miss You" which is an amazing R&B Ballad about missing a loved one. They also released the gag song 1cm Pride which is the girls making fun of each other. That song is a retro Hip Hop number reminiscent of Dr. Dre and Emimen. Now the full length album "Melting" tells the full story of who Mamamoo are.

The title song "You're The Best" is about how compatible they are with this guy. The lyrics are pretty decent but the true magic relies within the vocals and production. It truly is an upbeat song where the girls are not taking no for an answer in how compatible they are. The vocals are pretty normal, nothing too high or low, just enough for this type of beat which is comprised of different elements. Funk, R&B and Pop definitely comprise this track. Its pretty good and at first isn't so appealing but with time it grows. In my opinion, this song doesn't hold up to that of "I Miss You" or "1cm" but it is still good and fulfils its role.

The entire album is filled with fast tempo songs as well as slow tempo songs and they kind of switch out making for an interesting track list. The first song is 1cm Pride then my favorite song "Words Don't Come Easy" which is a lovely song about not having the words to speak when being next to each other. It has a cool saxophone that I just love. Next is You're The Best and then it reverts back to a slow tempo song in Friday Night featuring JungGigo. That's pretty much how this album works. We were given party songs but way more sensual songs and its created a nice mix of the two.

Mamamoo have never followed the trends such as a brass instrument being repeatedly played or any lame pop song that's just there to get you hyped for the album. They have always been true to the style that they are promoting. This entire album is filled with live instruments, a few hip hop numbers and vocals that you wouldn't hear in this age of music, even in R&B. In my opinion when they first debuted, Moonbyul had already perfected the rap and was already good at writing lyrics. The only thing she has really improved since then is her flow which is much more to her personality. Vocals were on point the entire time as I got the chills down my back from listening to many of these songs, especially "Just".

The only thing about this album that doesn't fit well with me is the fact that it doesn't really have a finish. It starts off with a catchy song and ends with a catchy song but even though I love Girl Crush, its the weakest song on the album. It should not be the closer. I think maybe Just or Hometown could have been the closer and I wouldn't have this feeling. This album lyrically, vocally, and production wise was well crafted and suits a good debut full length. It has tons of replay ability and will be a contender for album of the year. I rate this album a solid 8.5 out of 10. Mamamoo have perfected their style with this album and with more experience in writing on their part will only make future releases even better.
