There exist a manga that is drawn by Boichi, the creator of one of the greatest seinen manga of all time, Sun Ken Rock and Wallmn, and written by Yajima Masao. Raqiya takes place in modern day Los Angeles before the story setting is moved to Japan. The story of Raqiya is a bit hard to understand because the focus is on the religion Gnosticism. I'm not going to try to explain Gnosticism as it's very convoluted.
The main character is a girl named Luna who at the age of what seems to be 10 or so, lost her family while driving to Las Vegas. They meet a homeless and dying man who Luna's father instills faith back into his life and calls an ambulance for him. Right after that when Luna has to go to the bathroom, the family's car is destroyed in a car crash. Only Luna survives but 7 years later she is living lovely with her family. Turns out that she made a pact with Abraxas, one of the gods in Gnosticism to bring her parents back. Because of this, in 7 years Luna would become the God that Abraxas has been searching for.
Now the story from this point on seems interesting, especially with religion being a big part of it. Its just basically a love story between Luna and two of her friends that turn out to be figures in the religious system. This actually would not be so bad if it wasn't for the fact that none of the characters in this series are enjoyable. None of them are good at all. Isa was cool but his character was so bland as the series went on. Besides characters being bland, there are lots of moments that don't make sense. When Luna's parents die for a second time she is moving back to Japan with her uncle. Isa decides to call his friend Toshiya to look after her but then Isa just decides to go back with her. What was the point of having a scene where he talks to Toshiya and then he goes back with her? Even his parents were confused.
Speaking of Isa's parents, his dad had chapters all to himself and they sucked because he sucked but then later on you find out that he can operate Noah's Arc, which is weird because all he did was think about his son. He thinks about his damn son too much. Now the actual plot of Raqiya sucks. In the beginning you might feel it will be good because of the route the series takes, but no. The story lacks so many key points. How can Toshiya love Luna when he only meet her and has only spent a week with her? On top of that, they had no moments alone together. It was always the three of them. This manga is only 50 chapters with only 25 pages each. After the 15 chapter shit gets weird and after the 25 chapter the story is just all over the place. I still don't get how Isa's dad was able to pilot Noah's Arc. The story was trying to do so much in such a little time frame.
The story is just too lackluster and forced. It didn't take long to read this series but I got a headache from all the dumb shit that kept happening. The dialogue is horrible as well. One minute a character says this but does the opposite in the very next panel. The only redeeming trait about this manga is the artwork. Boichi is an amazing artist and he draws his female characters so beautifully. Other than that this series is ass. I made this review to tell you all not to read this garbage. But Read Sun Ken Rock because that is Boichi's series which is fantastic.
