Time and time again the New England Patriots are caught bending the rules or in the cases of Spygate and most recently Deflategate, boldly cheating. What punishments come from these heinous actions? None really, it's all good in Goodell's hood. The NFL is a place where a player will be the recipient of a severely longer punishment for a bag of weed than using steroids, repeatedly, an actual performance enhancer. The NFL is a place where paying players bonuses to hit other players is enough for the NFL to cripple your roster, coaching staff and front office; yet being caught and convicted in 5 cheating scandals and accused of infinitely more almost every year since 1982 is considered an untouchable dynasty. I'll go ahead and openly admit I'm a Colts fan, but that changes nothing. The Patriots are habitual cheaters and the NFL has created a culture where cheaters really do prosper. They become legendary and live forever as dynasties.
Let's look at some of the time have been caught cheating. Not accused, just caught. In 1982 The Patriots used a snow plow to clear the field so that they could kick the winning field goal in a scoreless game against the Dolphins. Dolphins Head Coach Dan Shula stated "this is the most unfare act in NFL history." This led to the NFL banning snow plows during games. I guess this is the one punishment that had long term effects. If only he knew how unfair things would be in the future.
In 2002 the Patriots defeated the St. Louis Rams to win the Superbowl. Marshall Faulk, running back of The Rams was adamant that The Patriots cheated in that game. No matter how much people tried to silence him he held to his guns and people thought he was crazy. That is until 2007 when the Spygate scandal broke. The Patriots were caught in the act of filming other teams. In fact they had been filming teams since 2002. Marshall Faulk was right, they did cheat to win that Superbowl and two more after it. The punishment for this was to fine the organization $250,000 and Bill Bellachick $500,000 as well as take their first round pick, for that one year. That was the entire punishment for 5 years of cheating and three stolen Superbowl wins. Some dynasty.
Then came 2014 and the Deflategate scandal. The Baltimore Ravens complained about the footballs used during their playoff game against the Patriots. Only for it to fall on deaf ears, almost. The Indianapolis Colts were up next and they fully believed the Ravens. When the game was over and the Patriots celebrated heading to another undeserved Superbowl the Colts raised more flags until an investigation was opened. How did it turn out? Well the NFL confirmed the Patriots cheated before the Superbowl even took place. They confirmed Tom Brady destroyed a cell phone with evidence to avoid it being found. Well what did they say? They said punishment would be determined after the Superbowl. Then they punished Tom Brady with a 4 game suspension. That was it, their punishment was a 4 game suspension and another championship. That is until Tom Brady's suspension was overruled today. Deflagate showed, with evidence that they Patriots cheated in at least two playoff games, and there is no punishment.
For comparison The New Orleans Saints were found to have paid players a variety of bonuses for performing certain actions on the field. Big tackles, blocking punts, and other things the game involves. What they didn't do was cheat or even bet on games. They provided players extra incentive to play better. How were they punished? The team was fined $500,000 and lost their second round draft picks for two years straight. Sean Peyton was suspended and entire season and defensive coordinator Greg Williams was suspended indefinitely. Bill Belichick has never been suspended. Player Johnathan Vilma was suspended for an entire season, Anthony Hargrove was suspended for 8 games, twice that of Brady's 4 game suspension that was overturned, Will Smith was suspended for 4 games and lastly Scott Fujita was suspended for 3 games. Do you see the difference here? The Patriots have been caught cheating surrounding 4 different Superbowl wins.
It's a joke. The NFL can't even fairly punish the breaking of their own rules yet they think they can accurately punish players for breaking actual laws. They fall way short on that end too. After years of allegations the NFL finally suspended Ben Roethlisberger for 6 games due to multiple sexual assault allegations and lawsuits. Ray Rice was suspended 2 games for beating his wife. Yet, somehow on July third Sheldon Richardson was suspended for four games for testing positive for marijuana. Not being caught with it, but testing positive. He's not even the worst case, Daryl Washington of the Arizona Cardinals was suspended for "no less than one year," for testing positive for marijuana and must go to substance abuse classes for his marijuana addiction.
Do you see the problem here? The NFL has created a place where you're better off beating your wife and sexually assaulting multiple women than smoking weed and not hurting anyone. The NFL has created a standard where it is better to cheat and get caught that provide players with cash incentives. Roger Goodell has turned the NFL into a joke and I can't watch it anymore. I already missed the CFL season. Maybe I can catch a little of the AFL season because I won't be watching the NFL. Maybe I'll start going to church on Sundays because I won't be watching any football games.
