61 Chapters of Toriko

I'm not the biggest fan of Toriko. I've given it a chance in the past and didn't like it. I decided I'd give it one last chance. This week I'll read some Toriko every day. I'll take the bus to campus instead of my usual walk, so I can read Toriko. I'll read it before classes and during lunch. We'll see just how far I'm going to go in the Toriko manga. I read pretty fast so so I'm giving it a business week. That's Monday-Friday. This is my journal of Toriko. This is True Life: Toriko

Galala Gator Arc

So is this like Fairy Tail where the main characters get paid to do various jobs? Kill a troll this week, perform in a play next week and save the world after that? Why is the main character so powerful at the start already? I'm all for starting out as a strong character but this is just ridiculous and it means the opponents are just going to get more ridiculous as it goes on. Main character can start fires with two fingers, the enemy has to start fires with the pinky finger. This is a slippery slope we're on already. For a manga whose fan base hypes it's brutality jokes about 15 kilo turds are pretty lame. Is this supposed to be funny? Breaking the forth wall isn't really clever anymore. Why is Toriko drawn to be not much bigger than average characters then in closeups he can easily hold three bottles of champagne in one hand. We got some scale issues here.I also understand that every character needs a dream. Toriko's dream is to make a menu. A menu. Not to cook, but make a menu. You can do that with wikipedia and google. It's like Sanji giving up on the All Blue and saying "I don't need a hidden legendary spot, just enough to fill up a menu and I don't have to cook it either." That dream is stupid. I'm not one for stomping on dreams but c'mon.

At the end of the day Toriko turned into a Pseudo-Super Saiyan, funny because he dresses like Goku, and kills the Galala Gator, then he heats it. Again, funny because he's dressed like Goku and he's a gluten. Like Goku? So after the first arc this is what I have. Toriko dresses and acts like Goku, his dream makes him a lazy Sanji, he takes jobs for money like Natsu and he's not the sharpest knife in the kitchen. This is a really well rounded and unique character guys. No seriously this is pure genius right here folks. It's funny too, not a single kitchen pun so far.

Fruit of Rainbow Arc

Let me guess he's going to get some fruit that's rainbow colored and you can taste every letter of Roy G. Biv in it's flavor. Nope, I'm going to be fair and read it. I thought the World Kitchen would be cool but it looks like an episode of Storage Wars, or Locker Hunters or any of those other shows where they go through storage units. "I paid $156 for this unit and found King Crab worth $1230. It was a good day"

We're really going to have a problem with the power scaling aren't we? I mean they already set Toriko up as unstoppable. To beat him there's going to have to be some animal or person that can punch a hole through the earth. Also this story is kind of dull.

Puffer Whale Arc

This is the last arc I finished the first time I read Toriko. Can we talk about how Toriko is an alcoholic? I mean Zoro drinks a barrel of booze and goes to sleep but Toriko doesn't stop until you're out of liquor. He's the guy at a party you have to tell "You ain't put in on this," because he drinks too much.

Seriously the power scaling. Toriko and Coco are both considered part of the Four Emperors and they were almost killed by the sea monster but some old guy knocks it out with no problem. Do you see the problem here? There's no limits in this world. Even a world like Dragon Ball had limits. Even in Kinnikuman when characters would regularly go to hell and fight devils or even Satan himself there were limits. The power scaling is seriously an issue and we're three arcs in. Scaling in general is an issue. Maybe I'm missing some comedy or something but Toriko and Coco are drawn to be the same height most of the time but then there are random scenes where Toriko is way larger for no reason. But seriously guys this isn't Fairy Tail. Toriko only took two jobs before he went on an adventure with friends. Natsu does like 15 off panel jobs before an adventure.

Regal Mammoth Arc

Why is this arc called the Regal Mammoth arc when it's only mentioned once in the first 10 chapters of it? This arc could be called the GT Robot Arc, the Battle Wolf Arc, Toriko's Old Friends Arc, but nope. On top of that this arc proves the complete lack of planning. This manga is obviously made up on the week to week basis. You don't have to have everything planned out to the tiniest detail but a little planning would be nice. Toriko barely beat the sea monster with help in the last arc but can easily handle it and several other beasts at once in this arc? How? Is he a Saiyan? I also saw a man get a hole punched through his abdomen that was big enough to put a baby through with ease. Yet he was good to go a few minutes later and his shirt wasn't even ripped.

Why did Coco's poison work on the GT Robo? It's a robot. Robot can't be poisoned. They're made of metal. Have you ever heard of a truck being poisoned? No. But somehow poison works on GT Robots. Is this saying that Dragon Ball GT was a poison on the Dragob Ball Franchise? Can you tell that I'm so tired of Toriko I'm looking for conspiracy theories within the story for no reason? Why was the baby mammoth barely bigger than the humans but the adult was big enough to go inside of? Why was the inside easily traversed? How did they not get destroyed by stomach fluid or anything else? Wouldn't the mammoth notice they were inside?

BB Corn Arc

Let me just say this. Wolves are not omnivores, nor herbivores. They are carnivores. So a wolf that prefers to eat corn over meat is stupid. Let's also talk about how we're really going to name the wolf Terry Cloth. Lastly, I thought they said the wolf was a boy in the last arc. I'm so tired of this. This arc is stupid. Gonna go try to feed a wolf corn and hope it doesn't eat me instead. I'm so done with this.

I just didn't have it in me to finish 100 chapters of Toriko. If you'd like to see my fully fleshed out review of Toriko you can click here
