TNA hasn't been around long but they've already managed to rack up a ton of spectacular moments. They were kind enough to come up with a list of them and put them all together for us. But how does it live up to expectations. Okay I guess.
Let's start with the biggest issue. They forced a lot of moments. They played to the celebrities too much. It's pro wrestling, celebrities like it. Chris Rock, the Tennessee Titans, Toby Keith, Rey Mysterio, they're all in there. They just forced some of these moments as well. I understand Chris Candido died due to an error in surgery, it's sad. He was only 33 and was a good guy. Was it a top ten moment that he managed a tag team that won the championships the day before he died. Not really. They also showed that stupid Toby Keith clip twice.
Jeff Jarrett is a pretty big deal as partial owner of TNA a wrestler who made his name in WCW and WWE. I get it, he's important. But why are so many of the moments centered around him? There are random moments that most people wouldn't consider great by any standard, but it's still in there. Sting as well. There isn't a single Sting match included but Sting has several moments. Not even as the iconic wrestler Sting, but as retired dad Steve Borden. Nobody wants to see Steve Bordon play golf or go to his kids baseball game. But it's in there.
Another issue is some of the interviews were really awkward. Take Raven for example. When they interviewed him for the DVD he's sweating and fidgeting and cutting promos as if he's making a challenge for the championship. James Mitchell is giving interviews in full gimmick. Meanwhile most of the other people are calmly discussing things in a normal manner and what the moments meant to them as people.
I know that makes it sound horrible, but don't get me wrong, there are a ton of great moments. Barbed Wire matches, the first steel cage match. My favorite was probably Elix Skipper running across the top of the steel cage. There's also the moment when Christian won the NWA title and fans jumped the barricade. So many people got in the ring that it broke. That's just something awesome and unplanned. There's also Cookiegate. If you don't know about Cookiegate it's when WWE filmed a commercial in TNAs arena. Some TNA guys went over and joined catering and only 3 guys would come out (Rey Mysterio, Rico and Luther Reigns). Some hilarious things happened including R-Truth helping himself to a plate from catering. Of course they were threatened with a lawsuit.
Even with all the things I complained about it's a good trip down memory lane for the early years of TNA. The DVD came out in 2006 so don't expect anything after that. If you ever wanted some history of TNA this is also a good place to get it. Sure there are a few moments with guys who couldn't even show up for the DVD (Kevin Nash and Scott Hall), there's a lot of Jeff Jarrett. There's also a lot of great matches. It really is a good watch. It's 3 hours so be prepared to sit for a while or break it up into smaller pieces. So if you've got the time you should check this one out.
