Ancient Greek Lifestyles

People of ancient Greece were polytheistic. People believed in many different gods and each of these gods represented something that was important to Greece society. The most important gods to their society were Zeus, Athena, Apollo, Poseidon, Hermes, Hera, Aphrodite, Demeter, Ares, Artemis, Hades, Hephaistos, and Dionysos.

People believe that these gods ruled over Greece and lived in Mount Olympus. Most of the information that is known about Greek gods was put into writing most notably done by Hesiod and Homer. Before the story of the gods was written down they were told by oral tradition.

Also in Greek literature the gods of Greece were given human bodies and interacted with humans. Some of the future demi gods (half god half human) came from gods (Mainly Zeus) having sexual relations with humans. More of the future demi gods like Heracles, Theseus, and Pirithous came from this as a result.

People of Greece also went to temples to worship the gods. Over time things for change for the Greece culture, Christianity would make an impact. In 49 AD Saint Paul traveled to Greece to spread the message of Christianity. Over time people converted to Christianity but the new found religion in Greece didn’t become official until the Emperor Constantine made it so.

There are other religions in Greece as well. According to www.greeka.com there are about 1.3% of people that practice the Muslim religion in Greece. About 0.7% of people in Greece are Catholic, Jewish, and Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Food is also a very important part of Greece. In Ancient Greece there were three fundamental ingredients for food. Wine, bread, and olive oil were three necessities for the people of Greece. Those three ingredients were serving the people of Ancient Greece just fine.

Wine was use for celebrations, medicine, and for other culture events. Bread was a must have for the people of Greece, Greeks had 50 to 70 different types of bread. Olive oil was used in most if not all foods that Greek people made. Greek people used honey and figs as well for sweet and savory food.

Meats were mainly used for festivity but were not a main source of food. According to www.olivetomato.com Greeks who consumed meat and milk were nomad hunters. Civilized people who farmed could get their food from what they harvested.

Overall Greeks ate foods that were food in the landscape of their country. Breakfast was eaten after sunrise and consisted of bread and wine. Supper was the main meal of the day, more suppers consisted of vegetables, fruit, fish, and perhaps honey cakes.

I hope that the reader has learned more about Greece. Hopefully the insight I gave you on religion and food caught your interest. Thank you for reading.
