Attack on Hype- Dub Review

If you've been following me on Twitter lately, you can see that I have been talking about 3 things lately, being Hyperdimension Neptunia, how I love the Vocaloids, and how everyone keeps hyping Attack on Titan. But I just want to talk about Attack on Titan. We all know that Attack on Titan was a breakout hit when it simulcasted last spring. It made fans of anime something to be happy about, and it has even crossed into a mainstream audience. But can the dub hold up to the the original Japanese voices?

Before I go on, there are spoilers, so if you never seen this show, well, I warned you.

Attack on Titan starts out with the scene where the Collosal Titan is looking down at all the people inside of the wall. Eren, our main protagonist, along with his friends Mikasa and Armin, and everyone else are all in shock about what they have all seen. Eren goes on to say "And on that day, we remembered the fear we lived in from the Titans. Humanity, cattle." Now let me stop. I'm not too fond of Eren's English voice. Bryce Papenbrook, who plays Eren Jaegar, is an amazing voice actor. For you guys that don't know who he is, he's Rin Okumura in Blue Exorcist, and Kirito in Sword Art Online. For Attack on Titan though, his voice just doesn't fit the tone of Eren. It just doesn't sound anywhere close to the Japanese voice actor. I know this isn't supposed to be matching voices, but I would prefer if someone else would have played him. Maybe my mind will change as the show goes on, but for now, this is just my opinion.

Now for Mikasa and Armin. I'm dissapointed. I'm not sugercoating this. Mikasa sounds way too much like a girly girl, and Armin sounds like a big tough man. Mikasa, in my opinion, should of been played by Brina Palencia. She has a deeper voice than Mikasa had in the Japanese version. I could just see her having a lower pitched voice instead of a higher pitched one. She's not a girly girl, and you can see that in the first ten minutes of this episode, especially when the bullies are fighting Armin. The expressions on her face show that she means business, and doesn't have time for joking around. Now Armin is the opposite. He should be the one with the higher pitched voice. He sounds too tough, and Armin is not a tough character at the beginning.

The one scene that I will say impressed me was the rainy forest scene where they were chasing and attacking the Titan. I kind of liked everyone's voice there. It sounded like it fit. The way the drama was, it didn't make it too over exaggerated, unlike the rest of the show. It kept it's pace, and all the voice actors did an amazing job. I don't have much more to say since it was really short, besides saying I want the rest of the show to be that.

Another scene that I felt was too over dramatic was when all the soldiers were returning home, banged up, body parts missing, all that depressing stuff. When the solider tells the woman that her son had done well fighting since he never returned, he says this in a way that I didn't find believable. Call me cold hearted, but he just screams and yells. Yes they did it also in the Japanese version, but here, it just felt like unnecessary yelling. The whole scene could of been projected better.

Final scene that actually almost made me cry was when Eren's mom is about to get eaten by the Titan. With the Japanese version, I didn't cry. I basically went "oh shit, please don't let her get eaten!", but there were no tears. In the English version after his mom says "You stay alive! I love you!", I was on the verge of tears. This had passion and emotion. It didn't feel exaggerated. It felt natural. It was a real touching scene, and it shows the brutality of the Titans, and that no matter how much people beg or scream, these Titans show no mercy. It also shows that Eren knows what he must do, and that's to eliminate all of the Titans so that mankind can live peacefully again, knowing that they don't need to fear the Titans anymore.

My overall opinion is that it was just okay. A couple of good scenes here and there, but overall disappointing at the voices. I want Mikasa and Armin's voiced changed, and with Eren, I'll see what happens. I want more realistic scenes like the forest scene, and I want less over exaggerated scenes. Overall, 6/10 for the first episode.

Well, that's all I have to talk about Attack on Titan, so if you hate me about it, remember, everyone is entitled to opinions, whether you agree with them or not. Until next time guys.
