Recently Sinestro regained control of a green power ring. Most people view this as a mistake, but the green ring NEVER makes a mistake. Sinestro may be the greatest hero ever. To understand my point of view let's take a look at Sinestro's entire life. Sinestro, this is your life.
Born on Korugar in sector 1417 Sinestro had a tough life but he persevered and became one of the planets greatest Anthropologist. He specialized in recreating lost civilizations. One Day Prohl Gosgotha had a crash landing and tossed the ring to Sinestro. Although he didn't understand the ring he managed to defend himself from the rings pursuer Qward. Prohl realized that he would be able to recover with treatment. Sinestro declined that treatment and left Prohl to die. Sounds like Sinestro is a dick but let me finish the story.
Sinestro used his love for justice and order to conquer his constantly warring home planet of Korugar. This may sound bad but Sinestro was a peaceful ruler. Justice was swift and the innocent were left unharmed and prospered under the leadership of Sinestro. Hmmm. Conquering a planet seems pretty nice now. Then the Guardians found out about Sinestro using his power to rule as a dictator on his planet, because Hal Jordan is a snitch. The Guardians stripped Sinestro of his ring. You would think removing a dictator would make a planet happy. But with Sinestro now powerless the planet fell back to shambles. The citizens of the planet demanded his power ring be returned. Apparently there are good dictators and Sinestro was kind to his people and protected them from harm. When the Guardians refused, Korugar came to view the Green Lantern Corps as a symbol of Oppression. Despite his action being viewed as wrong they were the correct ones that protected his people. Sinestro was dishonorably discharged for an honorable deed. Sinestro is just misunderstood, but his story doesn't end there, he's even more misunderstood.
The Guardians weren't happy stripping Sinestro of his power ring alone. They banished Sinestro to the Antimatter Universe. Eventually after drifting in space he landed on the planet Qward. Qward is the opposite of Oa. The Guardians hoped to humble him by this because the Weaponers of Qward hated Green Lanterns, all they did was make Sinestro hate them as well.The Qwards created a Yellow Power Ring for Sinestro to wield. Sinestro clashed with Hal "The Snitch" Jordan several times. The Guardians attempted to lock Sinestro and other criminals on Oa away permanently, so they could cruise for some hot alien ass. (Seriously that's what they did, they left on a "mission" to have sex with Zamarons) Sinestro honed his mental skill level and escaped. He murdered millions and destroyed dozens of star systems before he was stopped. Damn, how is he gonna make this look good? Stick around until the end.
Sinestro was sentenced to death by the Guardians. This was the first time they sentenced anyone to death. The Green Lanterns have a rule about no killing. Any Green Lantern that murders a person is discharged from the corps. Sinestro escaped death by sending his essence into the central power battery. He managed to shut down the battery and learn a secret of the Guardians and the Yellow Light. Good thing Hal Jordan didn't know he would have told everyone. (Why do I hate Hal so much?) Hal entered the Lantern and thought to have defeated Sinestro. But in defeat Sinestro was able to access the Yellow Impurity Parrallax. Sinestro used the power of Parallax to infect Hal Jordan's mind and teach him the meaning of fear. But trust me Fear is good.
Eventually Hal Jordan has become possessed by Parallax and the Guardians are forced to free Sinestro from the battery. However it's just a hard light clone. He fakes his own death and watches Jordan destroy the GLC from a distance. Eventually the last power ring falls into the hands of Kyle "Emo" Rayner(I like him, I just hate Hal and Guy, Kyle and John are cool)
There is some time travel hijinx that honestly has zero effect on the story cue the Benny Hill music and watch Old Hal, Young Hal, Parallax Hal, Kyle, GLC Sinestro, and Yellow Ring Sinestro chase each other around a ten year period until everything is right back where we left off and nobody knows but current Sinestro and Kyle.
No let's get back to the story of the most misunderstood hero of all time.(Next to Black Adam) Sinestro returns and fight Hal and Kyle to a draw in a handicap fight. When Hal broke Sinestro's ring he was forced to retreat to the antimatter zone to get another one. When he returns he kills all of the Freedom Fighters... don't call it a comeback.
Then from the fear implanted into the minds of the corps the Sinestro Corps were born. Sinestro masterminds a plot for already Emo Kyle's mother to die. This makes Kyle the new host for Parallax. Sinestro fakes defeat at the hands of the current ruler of his home world. This allows him to rule with everyone else none the wiser. Meanwhile the GLC are fighting both Parallax and the SC.
Sinestro meats Hal, Guy Gardner and John Stewart all entered the antimatter world but were caught off guard by Sinestro himself. He ripped off there asses, placed them in their hands, forcibly removed them once more, added a tail and watched the Green Lanterns retreat to Earth with their new tails placed between their legs.
This is where Sinestro becomes a hero again. For the first time ever The Guardians approve the GLC to use lethal force against the Sinestro Corps. The Sinestro Corps are eventually defeated. But Sinestro smiles. The GLC have a new sense of justice and order. Sinestro's. He may have had to murder millions, do some sick, and twisted things, but he succeeded. With the use of Lethal Force the GLC were able to finally overcome the biggest threat to the universe.(with help from the Justice League) This new power was necessary and from this point on Sinestro did no evil. The evil he did do was justified through the lives it would save shortly down the line. Don't believe me follow.
Sinestro is sentenced to death on his home planet. He is being transported by GLC when they are ambushed by the Red Lantern Corps. The RLC capture Sinestro and bring them to their base were he is placed upon a cross to be crucified Jesus Christ Style. First the Red Lanterns want Sinestro to feel the pain he has caused. They do the unimaginable, they threaten the one person he has done all this for. Sinestro wanted to make the wold a better place for his secret daughter. This enrages Sinestro who breaks free of the RLC and returns to his home world to save his daughter.
He sheds tears of a father when he is finally able to tell his daughter that he has watched her graduate medical school, become a Green Lantern and unite their people which is something he failed to do. Sinestro then reveals the prophecy to his daughter. The two force a truce between the GLC and SC for the upcoming War of Light and The Blackest Night.
I'm sure you've all read Blackest Night. Sinestro is shown to be even more of a man when he is manipulated while being attacked by the corpses of his wife and best friend. Eventually he able to overcome two deaths that have haunted him most. Not to mention the GLC were able to kill Black Lanterns because of Sinestro.
Eventually a being of the White Light is summoned. Sinestro attempted to control the light but is defeated due to his arrogance not allowing him to fully control the light. He is forced to watch as an inferior man in Hal Jordan does what he can not. It is then that Sinestro realizes that it is his ego that has stopped him from defeating Hal and reaching his full potential all these years.
During the War of the Green Lanterns Krona strips the leaders of all Corps of their rings. Sinestro's ring however refuses to return to him due to Krona. This angers Sinestro and he reluctantly agrees to help the GLC. At that moment somewhere in the universe an unnamed Green Lantern dies and his ring seeks a new host. it is that ring that lands upon the finger of Sinestro. Confused but willing to fight the Guardians convince Sinstro to help in their fight.
After defeating Krona the corps are divided on Sinestro returning to the corps. They realize the Guardians have had him trapped and are trying to forcefully remove his ring but it won't budge. Once freed Sinestro begins his Green Lantern duties. Sinestro learns of an attack on his home planet by his former Sinestro Corps. Sinestro uses his knowledge of the rings to create a power ring to temporarily reinstate Hal Jordan into the corps. They arrive on Korugar where Sinestro gives power rings to his people. They destroy the Yellow Battery, and kill all but one of the SC members. Sinestro then returns Hal home and goes back to work. coming full circle.
Yes Sinestro committed multiple genocides. Yes he was a dictator. Yes he manipulated lives for his goal. But his intentions were pure, just misguided. Sinestro only has the ability to focus on a goal not contemplating the consequences of his actions. But Sinestro is a hero. A misunderstood hero.
