Alisa Tagger felt that her life was in danger and she had to hide. Her mutant ability allowed her to become invisible as well as phase through anything. She chose to hide in the place she thought would be safest, The Xavier Institute. This worked well for a while as she went undetected.
However, Jean Grey happened to discover her mental signals one day. This led to Jean, Cyclops and Xorn tracking her down to confront her. Seeing how she feared for her life they allowed her to stay and provided her with private tutoring. Cyclops let her act as a first line of security to the mansion and consider her a member of the team.
Eventually she began to open up to and care for her fellow student Blindfold who spoke in a language she had made up and was almost completely blind. When Beastmode was telepathically controlled by Cassandra Nova, Alisa protected Blindfold and other students, finally revealing herself to everyone.
Soon after Cyclops was impersonated by Donald Pierce who was not a nice guys. She unknowingly joined his team called New Mutants where she was given the codename Cipher by Greymalkin. Not to be confused with the other mutant Cypher who can decipher languages. I
After discovering that Cyclops is an imposter she teams up with Greymalkin in an attempt to take Pierce down themselves. Greymalkin seems schizophrenic to the other Mutants because he's speaking to Cipher who is invisible. Eventually they agree to help and Donald Pierce is stopped.
The group is reformed soon after, this time under the real Cyclops. The team had some ups and downs. Blindfold was on the team, but was relatively useless since her powers allowed her to see the future, but she couldn't communicate what she saw. But a friendly face was good for Cipher to relax around.
The team member Ink left after he learned he wasn't a mutant. He was only gaining powers through tattoos he was getting from a munant tattoo artist. Soon the group comes into contact with a group calling themselves the Y-Men. They receive powers the same way Ink did. The crew was about to be defeated but Cipher finally reveals herself to everyone and pleads with Ink for help until he joins them and they're able to defeat the Y-Men. From that point on she remains secretive but doesn't make her appearance a secret to the group and actively takes part in missions not just stealth operations behind the scenes.
Cipher was next seen alongside Collosus and Surge during the San Francisco riots. They were keeping the peace until they were attacked by The Dark Avengers member Venom. Collosus demand they flee and leave him to fight Venom alone. The next time we see Cipher she chooses to follow Wolverine and joins the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning.
