Thousands of years ago during the reign of ancient Egypt the woman known as Meryet Karim was kind hearted, meek and poor. One day a sorcerer named Anath Na Mut had been defeated by Moses in a magic battle. As a result he had been exiled from Egypt for all eternity. He became a nomad wandering the desert for decades until he discovered the Tomb of Ka and the mythical Ka Stone that it held.
He placed the stone on his head and was transformed into Sphinx, an embodiment of magic. The new power caused him to black out. He was found by Meryet Karim, who had also been exiled. The reasoning behind her exile is unknown. Meryet nursed Sphinx back to health and fell in love with him. However, he never returned any of her affection. Instead he was only obsessed with having his revenge. So he left and she died of a broken heart.
However she was reborn as a boy in a wealthy Egyptian family. She became an architect and scholar but continued her search for Sphinx, hoping he would love her as a man. Instead she found the Tomb of Ka as well. She spent many years deciphering the words and secrets of the Ka Stone before she died again. This time she was reborn as woman who went on to marry the Pharaoh. She learned that she was immortal because of the radiation from the Ka Stone when she was nursing Sphinx back to health. She arranged to have the Ka Stone entombed with her when she died in this life hoping to absorb more of it's power without going mad as Sphinx did.
This was how she lived through hundreds of lives. Gaining more power and fortune. Eventually she located Sphinx and hoped to bring him back to her so they could rule the world. However she arrived just in time to see him murdered by Galactus. However, she would not give up on love. She created a cult that followed her every word and she lived like this for centuries and used them to unearth the now ancient Tomb of Ka.
It as at this point she used he Ka Stone to reshape the world into an alternate reality where Sphinx accepted her love. They ruled the world together, all powerful for centuries. However in this reality Sphinx tired of immortality, and committed suicide, leaving his love in the form of a cat.
Unknown to her a man named Sayge who was the embodiment of truth had teamed up with Richard Ryder, the original Nova. They were able to break through her psyche and bring her back to reality, thus returning the world to normal. However she swore that she would have her revenge on them for ruining her only moments of happiness. She never actually returned, it's speculated she once again died of a broken heart, but remained dead this time.
