The Fastest Man Alive

My name is Nya Hemmings and I am the fastest man alive, after The Flash, Usain Bolt and like 20 million other people, but I swear I’m still really fast. B-but anyways, a year ago, The Flash began its debut on the CW. The Flash is a backdoor spin-off stemming from CW’s other hit show, Arrow. The main star of the show, Barry Allen, played by Grant Gustin was introduced in Arrow and thusly, you should watch at least the first two seasons of Arrow before commencing Flash though it is not completely necessary.

Out of all the ongoing superhero shows currently airing, Flash is one of the best if not the best. One of most faithful comic book to TV adaptations, the Flash should be praised for its characters, storytelling, pacing and fun factor. The show is funny, the plot is well written, the characters are likable, the action is solid and Flash wastes no time jumping into the heart of the story.

Typically, a television series eases the viewer into their story. They take the time to build up the characters, world and concepts from the ground up. Flash does this at a quick pace (quick, get it?) and the people watching get to see plot progression next to immediately. The show introduces its antagonists and sets up tons of future conflicts from the get go. It’s nice to see a show that trusts its viewers enough to jump right into the juicy bits and not drag or end up being slow.

When Barry was a wee laddie, something unnatural killed his mother and his father was blamed for her death. Barry’s father was innocent but Barry could never quite understand what happened that night. There were Flashes all around him and before he knew it, he was suddenly three blocks away from his house. He grows up with Iris and Joe West all while trying to get his father out of jail. Now that he’s become the Flash, Barry becomes more determined than ever to stop meta-humans and find out the truth about that night.

The cast of The Flash is a fantastic bunch of individuals except Iris, Iris sucks. Harrison Wells is a smart but menacing man with a secret agenda. He typically drives the team at S.T.A.R Labs to excel and do better. Caitlin Snow and Cisco Ramon are a great help in the lab and their knowledge helps the team catch the bad guys all the time. Barry’s imprisoned father Henry Allen, is such a good character; he’s constantly believing in his son and encouraging him to live his life for himself. Then there’s Joe, Barry’s guardian, Iris’ father, who is great because he helps keep Barry grounded. Anytime Barry kind of loses himself, Joe is always there to help Barry through it.

Initially, when I saw who they picked to be the Flash, I was skeptical. However, though Grant Gustin isn’t cut and lean like how the Flash is in the comics (also he looks kind of silly in costume) he’s honestly a great Barry Allen. Barry in the show is a likeable, approachable scientist, that’s balancing various parts of his double life. When Barry gets frustrated with something, it’s always believable because he’s constantly shouldering the weight of the world. Grant truly brings this character to life in a way no one else could.

Unlike Arrow, which is a much darker show in tone and ambiance, The Flash is the opposite. Flash deals with terrible things, sure, and it’s dark at moments but Flash isn’t that type of show. Therefore, Flash is lighter in tone and more upbeat. There’s tons of jokes and humor, not just a bunch of perpetually angry, brooding characters. Cisco never fails to get a laugh out of people with his nerdy, witty lines and clever pop culture references. The team is close enough to crack the occasionally funnies with one another and you see how strong the various interpersonal relationships are.

Flash is good at catering to DC comics fans alike and those who don’t read them. The show drops tons of Easter eggs for Detective Comic fans to catch and get excited about. Even if it’s just a name, the DC fans can get hype because it’s a name from the comics meaning, they can expect that character to become a hero or villain eventually. However, it’s also accessible for new comer because it’s explains and builds up these entire things well enough for anyone to appreciate them.

Wrapping things up, Flash is not a show you want to skip out on, whether or not you like the Flash or know who the Flash is. It’s an absolutely magnificent series that will continue to go strong and expand the CW TV universe. The series is fun; the characters are great and awesomely paced. You too can be a part of something great by becoming one with the Speed Force.
