Top Ten Albums of 2014: Part Two

Yesterday I gave you 5 of my top 10 albums. So I'm back today with the other 5 in the top 10. Again these are in no particular order. You're free to rearrange them any way you choose. You're also free to substitute your favorite album for any of these. If you missed part one you can click here to see it.

Run The Jewels - Run The Jewels 2: This is the best combination of a producer/rapper and rapper. As Killer Mike put it "I'm black, he's white, he understands my pain, we're still friends." It's the sequel to the first in every aspect. Both Killer Mike and El-P make references to the first. Killer Mike is still on his lyrical revolutionary and El-P attempts to make a plea to the white race to understand the issues we as black people face. Even with the heavy social commentary there's still time for a few fun tracks on this album. My favorite tracks are Early and Lie Cheat Steal.

Jeezy - Seen It All: The Autobiography: This is Jeezy's best album It's different than the confrontational Jeezy we've seen. This is calm, aged and wiser Jeezy. He attempts to make amends with people from the past like Freddie Gibbs while trying to explain that money won't solve all problems. While he's richer he's still got the same problems as everyone. The difference is he now has to go at it alone. The album tells stories of Jeezy's past but discusses the alienation he now faces. While tracks like Seen it All let us know Jeezy has been there and done that he reflects on the loneliness and choices that made him leave drugs alone on tracks like Win is A
Win. My Favorite tracks are Holy Ghost and No Tears.

Big K.R.I.T. - Cadillacica: The name of this album is stupid. The cover looks like a blaxploitation of Star Trek. That's where the complaints end. K.R.I.T. flexed his production skill once again producing all but 3 tracks on the album. I stated the cover looks like a blaxploitation version of Star Trek but it fits. Throughout the album K.R.I.T. tells the story of an alien Cadillac crashing on earth and traveling. Learning what we're about as a people through soul music. I can't make this up. It's a strange wrapping but provides the music that made us like K.R.I.T. to begin with. My favorite tracks are Soul Food and Lost Generation
Ghostface Killah - 36 Season: I don't know what Ghostface is talking about.I never know what Ghostface is talking about. Apparently he freestyled the whole album. I doubt that. Then again it would explain why I never know what Ghostface is talking about. He just makes things sound incredible and provides you with an album full of quoteables that either make you say "ooo" or "that's funny." The production on this album is what makes it so great. The Revelations produced every track on the album. It gives the album a consistent sound filled with smooth piano melodies and classic samples. Ghostface is nice but the production on this album is just crazy. My favorite tracks are Loyalty and Double Cross.

Bas - Last Winter: Bas is the best rapper that J. Cole has signed to his Dreamville Records. Bas is to Dreamville what Royce Da 5'9 is to Shadyville. If you can't get the boss on the record get the guy who is just as good, sometimes better. This album is laid back to the max. It's like the album is saying when stuff gets bad just relax, there's no point in stressing. It's a hard album to pin down. It's enjoyable and has some cool production. I can't tell you any of Bas' lyrics but he flows on tracks effortlessly and it adds to that "just chill out" vibe. Also he's got a video to almost every track on the album. My favorite tracks are Mook in New Mexico and Charles De Gaulle to JFK.

You can hear Darrell on the CP Time and Powerbomb Jutsu podcasts. He also plays classic arcade games on The Cabinet

Darrell S.

Hey, I write stuff, a lot of different stuff, that's all.
