Album Review And A Story: Shortest Beat Tape Of All Time - Caleb Scalzo

The other day I saw a rapper ask for an extended version of instrumental. I was wondering why he couldn't just loop it. Of course the producer asked this too, and it turns out he didn't know how to loop it. All I do is edit a few podcasts but even I'm able to create a simple loop of an instrumental. It's just seems so weird that rappers aren't able to loop an instrumental themselves. That's why it's going to be hard for them to deal with the Shortest Beat Tape of All Time. The tape contains 4 instrumentals, but that's not why it's the shortest ever. All 4 were made in under two hours, still not why it's the shortest. Each instrumental takes approximately 22 seconds to start and finish. You can hear the entire thing in under 2 minutes. So lets take it track by track.

Grand Am Trails

This is a smooth jazzy track highlighted by the piano. If you close your eyes you can imagine driving along a winding wooded road with the top down, wind flying across your head. It's a relaxing track. As you drive down the road to your destination you wonder what's ahead of you.

Alhambra Ruins

You're sitting at a booth alone in the diner you frequent. You can smell the grease burning from the kitchen. It's not much for scenery but you enjoy the place. Your client arrives and begins to tell the story about how she thinks her husband is cheating. The jukebox plays a smooth tune, yet it's filled with tension. The mixture of piano and drum allows the tension to build but it never peaks. Your client leaves and the tune fades out.

Missing Tonsil

You've caught your clients husband cheating. He's a surgeon. He removes the tonsils from a patient and promptly flirts with the nurses. They head to an empty room and embrace each other. You sneak in to take pictures for proof of his infidelity. You made a mistake, your phone wasn't on silent and the camera sound alerts them. You reach the parking lot and jump into your car, this track plays as you flee the scene in a hectic attack. There's no need for piano on this track, the tension has finally peaked and the story is at it's climax.

Montana Sawdust

You've been searching for your client tireless for the past few days. In your mind this track plays and fills your mind with tension and anxiousness. You've tracked her to a Sawmill in Montana. When you arrive you see that her husband has strapped her to a log cutter. He sees you and reaches for his gun, you pull yours. You're a detective not a cop, but you have to protect your client. He begins to pull the trigger but you were first. The client is almost to the blades. You can't make it in time so you jump and reach to the button. The music stops and fades to black.

Honestly, I couldn't figure out a precise way to review an instrumental album, especially one that can be heard completely in under two minutes. I decided to write a story to go with it simply because it needed one. It really does feature an amount of rising tension throughout and you should give it a listen. It's not like it's going to take an hour out of your day. You probably spent longer reading this than you will listening.
