Flame of Recca Volume 21 Review: He Keeps Getting Uglier

Chapters 198-207

Volume 21 is a solid volume. I enjoyed myself reading this. Of course we got more fake deep moments but they weren't a cringe as past moments. After Recca and his crew enter the final room Rasen is confronted by Aoi who took out Tokiya earlier. She informs him that the Shishiten is about to pick up his lack and names the other members. How many times are we going to see a power shift in this series. We went from Uruha to Ura-Uruha to now the Shishiten? This is just one faction with a new leader each week. But now that Koran is basically gone and doesn't need any body guards or even the Kurei clone so what purpose does Shishiten have? The author clearly made too many characters and doesn't know what to do with them.

Moving on, after a very short scuffle between Recca's crew and Koran's body guards, the Tendo Jigoku comes to life to choose Recca but after Recca declines, it chooses Koran. At first the Jigoku wanted a power host but then it just wanted a greedy, villainous entity. IF that were the case why didn't it choose Koran in the first place? That man lost an arm for nothing when it could have just fused with him from the start. The cave collapse so half of the crew dips while Recca, Fuuko, and Hisui, who shows up late, stay behind to fight. Then Hisui dies. I honestly didn't care enough about the character to feel anything when she dies.

Anyway, Kurei and Joker show up to be real badasses. I start to care about what happens now. Raiha informs us that Kurei's mother is fine so now Kurei doesn't have to murder every Uruha member now. Things are getting hot as we are about to see Recca, Kurei, Joker, Raoha and Fuuko in action. Hopefully we get to see Raiha and Fuuko team up since they're Madogu's are twins. That would be dope to see. I would love to see Joker actually go all out since he didn't do that against Kaoru. Recca and Kurei are going to do their thing but I wonder if Renge will fight Kurei since she did send his ass over a cliff.

I thought this was a very well paced volume that had something for everyone. That artwork here was splendid. The shots of Koran fusing with the Jigoku were perfect. The details and use of black ink were amazing then. Now I wonder what will become of Rasen and Kirin. Will they join the Shishiten or Recca down the line at some point? Hopefully we never see them again.
