Sometimes a character is added to the story as space filler to never be thought of again. However there are times when those characters rise beyond that. While it is rare, it does occasionally happen. The trigger happy, wisecracking bad ass Misty Knight is one of those characters. She started as Jean Gray's roommate and became a star in her own right.
Misty was born Mercedes Knight in New York City. Constantly she was told of her bad attitude but nobody could stop her because she excelled at whatever she did. This is how Misty became one of the youngest police officers to make lieutenant in history. During this time she first met her life long friend Colleen Wing.
During a trip to the bank Misty noticed some men acting strangely. She approached them to learn what was happening. The men were actually terrorist. Misty attempted to stop the bomb and lost her arm in the process although saving dozens of lives.
Tony Stark heard the story on the news and visited Misty in the hospital. She was most upset about not being able to work as a police officer anymore so Tony created the first version of her bionic arm allowing her to return to work. The superiors at her job refused to let her back into the field because they considered her new arm to be a liability. Instead they gave her a desk job. It lasted briefly but Misty couldn't take it and eventually quit.
Misty then formed a private detective firm with Colleen called Knightwing Restorations LTD. Their first major case would see the duo in Hong Kong. The duo was attempting to take down Emil Vachon's criminal empire. During this time Misty saved Colleen from being raped solidifying their friendship.
When the cult of Kali attacked Colleen Misty went to her apartment to rescue her. There she met Iron Fist and they each assumed the other was attacking. Iron Fist knocked Misty out in this first meeting but she'd get revenge later. The two meet again and realize they aren't enemies. Iron Fist helps her track Colleen to the villain Master Khan. She meets with her old partner Rafael Scarfe, better known as Rafe who helped them locate Colleen.
The trio took out Ravager and Radion who had been holding Colleen. Her next case saw her helping to expose the corruption in Danny's company so that he could get it back. The two were forced to continue working together to take down Chaka and The Golden Lion Gang. During this time they start dating.
Misty next goes undercover in Bushmaster's criminal empire. She uses the name Maya Korday and works her way up. Eventually she gets enough information to take him down. This leads to a confrontation that draws in Colleen, Iron Fist and Spider-Man. As they fight their way to Bushmaster they take on The Steel Serpent. He ironically calls Misty and Colleen Daughters of The Dragon while gloating. They then beat him senseless.
Luke Cage was then hired to kidnap Misty for Bushmaster as revenge otherwise Luke's friends Claire Temple and Noah Burstein would be killed. When he attempted to grab Misty he had to fight Iron Fist but Misty convinced them to stop fighting because they were friends. Instead she comes up with a plan to fake her kidnapping and defeat Bushmaster. Afterwards Danny and Luke form Heroes for Hire. Misty frequently worked for them on missions until they started getting less cases. She moved on for working with Nelson and Murdoch as a paralegal. During this time she also helped Daredevil beat Mr. Hyde and Insomnia.
Misty decided law wasn't for her. Instead she linked up with Colleen again to reform Daughters of The Dragon. This time they worked as bail bondsmen. Their most famous case was Celia Ricadonna a rich publisher in New York and a crime boss behind the scenes. While attempting to retrieve a microchip she had stolen Misty had her arm cut off again. This time Tony Stark was able to give her an improved version. With the new arm she led an attack on Celia's fortress and took her down because it was personal, not just business.
During Civil War Misty is contacted by Tony Stark, Reed Richards and Spider-Man to reform a Heroes for Hire to capture unregisted superhumans. Eventually she agrees and forms a team with Colleen, Shang-Chi, Orka, Black Cat and a several others. Misty and Danny began having problems at this time because he sided with Captain America. After Civil War the team was betread by Humbug and captured by Hulk's Brood. This led to the team breaking up. When the Red Hulk story takes place Misty leads a team of women heroes and villains to challenge Red Hulk, they lost and it was a one shot but it was just cool seeing Misty leading all these women in what she called lady's night. Caring for women behind the scenes is actually a big part of what Misty does.
Danny proposes to Misty and the two get engaged then move to Harlem. After some time Misty thought she was pregnant however it turned out to be a false positive. The two stayed a couple but ended the engagement and lived in separate apartments. Misty continued her detective work and was hired by a mobster to find the killer of his brother. The dead body had the symbol of The Hand, a ninja clan now under control of Daredevil. However, Misty believed this was too vicious for Daredevil.
The case continues to go further and further down the rabbit hole. Eventually she joins forces with Shroud and Silver Sable who were also independently investigating murders that tied in with Misty's. Her investigation came to a halt when she chose to participate in an intervention with Daredevil who had been possessed by a demon. Daredevil dispatched ninjas to kill them but they managed to escape.
Misty could not run forever as she was attacked in an alley and left for dead. However, Misty doesn't die easy as we've already learned. She awoke in the hospital and informed Silver Sable and Iron Fist that she knew the murderers were actually members of the NYPD who pretended to be part of The Hand to commit murders while concealing their identities to hide their corruption. Misty created a plan and forced them into revealing themselves. She was shocked to learn one was her former partner Lt. Rafe. She then helped a restored Daredevil clean out Hell's Kitchen. It was also during this time she officially ended her relationship with Iron Fist.
Misty is kidnapped and mind controlled by the villain Puppet Master into creating a new Heroes For Hire where she employed; Sam Wilson, Black Widow, Moon Knight, Silver Sable, Ghost Rider and even Spider-Man briefly. Eventually Paladin and Danny broke the mind control but she continued with the operation paying the heroes in either money or information. She used the team to take down drug cartels who were pushing the Atlantean drug Hook.
When Heroes for Hire comes to an end she formed Misty Knight's Crew. She brought together D-List villains like Lady Stilt Man, Speed Demon and Tiger Shark. The purpose was to compete against Purple Man's new Villains for Hire team. They would essentially cut in on the work and Misty actually made them successful villains when most of them had never completed a crime and got away with it. After breaking up Purple Man's crew Misty takes a new job for SHIELD.
Misty goes undercover in Bagalia, a country essentially made up of only super villains and most crime is legal. She was gathering information on Hydra's resurgence but Sam Wilson was injured on one of his first missions as Captain America. Misty saved him and teamed up to stop Baron Zemos.
Since then she's been dating Sam Wilson and working alongside him where they've essentially started training a new Falcon named Joaquin Torres. Besides being his girlfriend, back up and the person making sure his mental health is right, she makes sure to inform people "I have my own things going on too." She sends Sam off on vacation with his brother Gideon to watch leaves change colors after some trying missions. She picks up the Captain America shield and heads to her office.
Misty took up a pro-bono case when sex tapes that featured women who were superheros and villains started floating around. Lady Stilt Man attempted suicide after a tape featuring her was aired. Misty visited her in the hospital and promised that she would have justice. Misty tracked down the men in the videos who were all sleazy rich men looking for one night with these heroes and villains.
After tracing the checking accounts and phone calls she finds the villain is a man named Slug. She arrives Slug's yacht while he is attempting to bring in more buyers. He's using life model decoys of these women to create porn and corner the market. Misty isn't with that so she destroys all the powerless life model decoys of heroes and villains like Storm, Black Cat, Psylocke. She then takes out the buyers and knocks Slug into the ocean to be arrested by the Coast Guard as she streams it all live on the internet getting revenge and justice. She receives praise from heroes and villains alike because she might be dating Sam and back him up on missions, but she's "got her own things going on."
