Most People Are Average

There's this thing going around where if something isn't the best in the world, then it's garbage. It happens with movies, if it isn't groundbreaking and genre shaking then the movie was horrible even if it was fun and exactly what was advertised. It happens with dating, women want a 6'3 man built like The Rock but she's more like someone's mom that shows up to school with the dirty bath robe or men want a woman like Beyonce and he's more Slave Z than Jay Z.

It happens with people making fun of others for the jobs they have. "Ha you work 9-5" or "this guy works at walmart," and my favorite "what you man you don't make a 100,000 a year." When these people get called out for their unrealistic standards they stick to their ground. There's no trolling, they truly believe these things.

But here's the shocker. Most men aren't going to be 6'3 and most women aren't going to be built like Beyonce. That's just a fact of life. See the thing is, most people aren't extraordinary. Sure, everyone has a talent or something they're really good at. But for the most part, we're not really special snowflakes. We're just average people that do average things like go to work. Most of us do work 9-5 or some similar hours, it's the reason traffic always sucks in morning or evening. Most of us aren't making 100,000 a year either. We're just average somewhere between 25000 and 40000 for most people.

Average height for a man in The United States and Great Britain is 5'9. You just have to love that 5'11 man for who he is because 6'3 men gonna be rare. It's not like every 6'3 man plays pro basketball either. Chuck down at the home depot unloads trucks 5 days a week every week since 98. He was once mistaken for Charles Barkley but he's just Average Chuck. Jessica was once mistaken for Nicki Minaj at the hair salon and she played along, what they didn't know is she's just average Jessica who works at the call center.

There's this idea that you have to be exceptional at something otherwise your life is meaningless going around and that's just stupid. Often times the people pushing this narrative aren't even extraordinary. They're just average like the rest of us. Don't get me wrong I used to get down about things too, I wish I could afford to take my summer vacations in Aspen, then I remembered I don't even know how to ski and most people aren't the children of wealthy lawyers. I wanted to go the NFL at one point and I was upset when I realized I wouldn't make it, then I learned the NFL has 1,696 players active if every team has a full 53 person roster. There's 319 million people in America, when it comes to playing football, most of us are just average.

As I write this I think about all the grades I've had over the years. I'm really mad at myself now because of a C I got in a corporate tax class. Not because I got a C but because I was upset about being average. A lot of people didn't even pass that class because the teacher expected us to know damn near every corporate tax law and loophole off the top of the head, but I was just average. There's a reason they have code books and tax law is easily accessed through government sites, because the average person can't remember that.

If a movie gets 3 out of 5 stars, I'm still going to watch it. That's an average movie for an average guy like me, and I happened to love Dodgeball. Hey, there's nothing wrong with aiming for the stars or wanting to do something incredible with your life. I'm just saying don't kill yourself when it doesn't happen because it won't for most of us. Just take the shot anyway and if it doesn't work out for you, that's life. Now, excuse me, I have to go write a book. I really want it to be a best seller so I can get J.K. Rowling money, I'd settle for Zane before the bankruptcy money but I'll probably make like fifteen dollars on it and that's okay, because I'm an average writer.

You can hear Darrell on the CP Time and Powerbomb Jutsu podcasts. He also plays classic arcade games on The Cabinet
Darrell S.

Hey, I write stuff, a lot of different stuff, that's all.
