The Flash Season Three: Options
I entitled this post “options”
instead of predictions because I realized that not only is there a wealth of
material to choose from, but the show has always blended different elements of
the Flash mythos to tell its own story. So as we look forward to Season 3,
these are just some ideas I have about what they could do. And it’s more
like what I would do if I were writing the shows. (Spoilers if
you don’t know anything about Flashpoint.)
The State of Heroes
One of thee coolest things about Flashpoint
is about how it takes liberties with not only Barry, but all the other members
of the Justice League.
§
Bruce Wayne dies in that
alley, and Thomas Wayne becomes Batman (one who kills without a second thought)
and Martha Wayne becomes the Joker.
§
Superman is captured upon
his arrival in Metropolis (he misses Smallville) and causes a lot of damage
with his landing. He’s put in an underground bunker and is never exposed to the
sun, so when we meet him, he’s literally a 98 lb. weakling.
§
Captain Marvel (who’s
renamed Captain Thunder) is made up of six children that must call down the
lightning by saying “Shazam!” at the same time.
§
Wonder Woman and Aquaman
were monarchs who sought to form a peace alliance between their two kingdoms.
Somehow that translated into Arthur spending a night with Diana, and he did so
in front of Mera (that boggles the mind, doesn’t it?). Mera didn’t like it, she
moved on Diana, so Diana killed her. Arthur and the Atlanteans then declared
war on the surface dwellers and on the Amazons, and they’ve literally torn up
the world with their fight.
There’s lots more, but you get the point.
So will Flashpoint affect Arrow? Legends of
Tomorrow? What about Supergirl?
Arrow
What if we get the Arrow
reset that some, repeat SOME fans want? For me, that would be if Laurel died at
the end of Season 1 instead of Tommy, and Tommy grows into Oliver’s worst
nightmare. A villain that knows all of his secrets. Like a Hush for Green
Arrow. Also, Thea should’ve died instead of Moira, and then it could be
revealed at some point that Moira was the one masterminding the various destruction
schemes for Star City all along. Love interest? Sara as Black Canary. No
Laurel, and Felicity’s family moves away right after Laurel’s death because
they think Star City is too dangerous.
Arrow would also be thee
perfect show to introduce Nightwing and Batgirl. They’ve mentioned Blüdhaven before, but there is no earthly reason why Dick Grayson can’t be a guest star.
It would interfere with nothing related to the DC Movie Universe. Same with
Barbara, because we will never see either of them in a Snyderverse based movie.
I like Diggle. And Lilah. I just no
longer care what happens to them.
Some of literally the greatest
comics ever written have been centered around the Green Lantern/Green Arrow
friendship. They could really redeem Arrow from the doomed Felicity
& Friends hole they’ve written it into by bringing on Hal Jordan
and some of those classic stories. If they continue down the path they’re on,
i.e., Felicity, Felicity, and even more Felicity and it’s all Smoak and
Mirrors, then people will ask, with even more volume than they are now: How
much longer is Arrow going to be on the air?
Legends of Tomorrow
Everything about The Flash
and Arrow is what fed Legends of Tomorrow. I never would’ve had
Laurel around, but it would be cool if they’d introduced Black Siren on Legends
as an anti-hero. And maybe Atom’s costume could not be armor, but closer to the
comics, and his experiments with the white dwarf star would make him the hero
we know. Instead of a substitute Ted Kord/Blue Beetle dressed like Diet Iron
Man.
I would’ve kept Ronnie Raymond as
the young half of Firestorm, and used Shayera as Hawkgirl (the one from Justice
League Unlimited). And I cannot see how, if they have a chance to use Barry’s
reset, we do not get some form of Green Lantern.
Which brings up the point of, since
they’ve introduced the JSA on Legends, will they be putting together an
official JLA on Arrow and The Flash? Because remember, we have
almost everyone available now.
Hawkman
Hawkgirl
The Flash
Green Arrow
Red Tornado
Black Canary
The Atom
Martian Manhunter
We’re missing Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, Aquaman,
Cyborg, Green Lantern and Captain Marvel (no I don’t call him Shazam, that’s
THE WIZARD’S NAME). But there’s enough there to officially start the JLA, since
Batman and Superman weren’t actually a part of it when it started. And we are
getting Kal-El on Supergirl, we’re just not sure in what capacity yet.
Who’s
actually going to show up from the JSA? We’ve already seen Earth 1 Wildcat. And
Hourman in the last hour of Legends. (And yes I know that “Mr. Terrific”
is on Arrow, but just in name only.) I want to see Dr. Fate, Alan Scott/Green
Lantern, Dr. Midnite and Johnny Thunder, just to name a few.
Supergirl
After the introduction of Jay
Garrick and Earth 3 at the end of last season, I say that there’s no way they
don’t merge these worlds. Because at some point we need to see the Crime Syndicate, and Supergirl or Legends is the place to introduce
them. Whether people like it or not, Superman and Batman are the flagship
heroes of the DCU, so whatever Superman does on Supergirl is going to
set a tone for the rest of the TV universe. So even if they just have him go
off planet so Kara can be the only Kryptonian around, it will affect every
single show, not just Kara’s show.
And c'mon, who doesn't want to see Kara have at least one good adventure with Barbara?
There’s also not one single good reason
not to introduce the Legion of Superheroes on Supergirl. They already featured
the big three Legionnaires on Smallville (Lightning Lad, Cosmic Boy, and
Saturn Girl), and in some continuities, Kara eventually ends up going to the 30th
century and staying. As well as falling in love with Brainiac 5.
The Flash
Most of what I want to see I
already laid out in my predictions. I’m betting that Season 3 is going to give
the Barry & Caitlin people a taste of that relationship. I also don’t see
how Caitlin does not become Killer Frost at some point in the new timeline.
Danielle slays as KF, and people love to see the character.
With Nora
Allen alive, and Henry not in jail, there’s no need for Joe West as an adoptive
father. So Barry may not even know Iris. She’ll probably be married to Eddie
(screw the future) anyway. Barry could still meet Caitlin through his interest
in Dr. Wells tho.
Speaking of Wells, we will get to
see the phenomenal Tom Cavanaugh play yet another version of Harrison Wells,
the one we see right before he’s possessed by Thawne. A Wells that never gets
taken over doesn’t do the particle accelerator magic until about five years
later. And this is a Wells that’s happy, and in love with his wife. I have to
wonder if there will still be a Reverse Flash.
I also think that both Wally and
Jesse Quick are going to be powered up now, and maybe they’ll be the heroes instead
of Barry. If that’s true, then it’s a guarantee that they will be far more
competent with their speed powers and crime fighting than Barry ever was. If there’s no particle accelerator explosion, there won’t be
any metas as a result of it, but I’m betting we still see some heroes. Maybe
from a Legends or JSA crossover. Also, we’ll see what the level of crime
is in a city with no metas, good or bad.
I’m ambivalent
as to whether or not they bring Patty back, because she was generally a waste
of time. We knew from the jump that relationship wasn’t going to last. Gorilla
City is coming up at some point as well. That should be fun to watch.
I also don’t
care if I ever see Zoom again. Seriously.
I really
really hope that we see more of Earth 2 Laurel, Black Siren. Something about
that version of the character that Katie really just shines in.
Almost no
way that we’ve seen the last of Jay Garrick.
What I truly
hope does not happen is, loads of episodes with a depowered and whiny
Barry. That is just the last thing the audience wants to experience. The other
thing that my spider-sense is tingling about is the “Nora Allen must DIE!”
trope. If they paint Nora’s death like Edith Keeler’s in the Star Trek original
series classic The City on the Edge of Forever, I will be really
disappointed. Barry becomes The Flash because of the lightning accident. Not
because his mom dies. Nora Allen quite frankly was never that important to the
mythos. So I really don’t want to see a series of Butterfly Effect episodes. They will feature
constant CryBarry scenes, where all this crappy stuff exists because Nora’s
not dead. And then some apparition from the Speed Force (or Martin Stein) has to
explain to Barry that letting his mother live is what caused all of this. Just
no. If they're going that route, then they need to do it like they did it in the book. It was Barry's careless use of his speed in tearing through time and punching holes in the time stream that changed everyone's destinies.
I would also use The Flash
and Arrow to introduce Doc Magnus and the Metal Men, the Creeper, and
Black Lightning. That would be BUCKETS of fun. And as I’ve said several times
now, The Flash is also a pitch perfect show to introduce young Billy
Batson, giving us Billy
Batson and the Power of Shazam!
They could give Billy a pilot episode and let it spin off into his own series, the same way Arrow introduced The Flash. Gnarly.
The most obvious issue, besides making the changes themselves, is how long they're going to last. If there will be differences, but it's only for an episode or two, then "Flashpoint" won't really have an impact. If the changes last all season long, then WOWZERS. Because we will have adjusted to the new world by then. Which means it'll be tough to let it go. Barry will restore the original timeline, but everything we've seen all season long will go away. It'll be kind of like when Robin and Stephanie said goodbye.
Can you IMAGINE a scene like that between Barry and Caitlin? ....Heads would explode and hearts would shatter.
