Twice - Page Two Album Review

Twice are back with their second mini album Page Two. The album consists of 6 songs including the lead single Cheer Up. Unlike usual I will just jump right into what worked and did not work for this album.

The album starts with Cheer Up which is a very fun song. The lyrics aren't that special but the message is. Vocally it was fine, much better than their first single. The beat is very creative but it doesn't have a finish. It builds up to the climax but never actually climaxes. The chorus is definitely my favorite part of this song. The song is catchy but not too catchy. I had to listen to it several times before I could actually enjoy. I like the beat but there was a lot going on.This is a 9 member group so the beat can't be doing its own things while 9 people try to rap and sing.

The other songs on the album are pretty lackluster. Precious Love shows us a better side of the girl's vocals but the rapping is flat. The rapping doesn't move me in any fashion. The beat is doing a lot here but its cool because things are much slower. This song is better flushed out here as its not trying to get you to dance but to listen. Touchdown is a mess. Way too much going on with no clear direction but to make a song you can dance to.

Tuk Tok has a great beat and some really good rapping. This song should have just been the rappers because they are the only memorable thing here. Woohoo is in the same category as Touchdown. Headphone is my favorite song here. The beat is concise, it has a clear purpose and message. The synchronization here is really good unlike most of their songs. We had to sit through 5 songs to get to Headphones which has good singing and rapping.

There are clearly things wrong with this album. One thing I have noticed about Twice, whether all of the girls can sing or not, they don't have good synchronization. they don't sound good singing together. In terms of music quality, as it stands now, Twice will make low quality music but continue to sell because of visual effect and because they are from JYP. Separately they make better quality music but as a group its not likely.  Just like Ohh Ahh, Cheer up should have just been a single with a couple songs. Cheer Up, Headphone and Precious Love should have been released as a single because the other songs are just filler. The album as a whole failed at impressing me as the girls sound the same and there is no real talent shown.

There will always be a lead singer or a singer who is clearly better than the rest but Twice has a hodgepodge of bad to good singers. This leads to them not being able to harmonize well. I give this album a 3/5 with the 3 coming from Headphone being such a good song.
