Bad Endings

Have you ever watched a series and when finished, wondered why it had the ending it had? From TV shows to movies, this is a common problem. In anime, this happens almost all the time. You do research and find out the source material the show was based on, i.e. novels or manga, keeps going. You wonder why they didn’t keep going. Why is there no Season Two? Who do we blame? The company? The answer to this is yes and no.

Let’s look at one of my favorite shows of all time, Spice and Wolf. Spice and Wolf is a show about a merchant named Lawrence who travels around with a wolf girl he finds in his wagon one day named Holo. The duo are on two missions. One is to return Holo to her hometown in the North, and two, for Lawrence to start his own business one day. The show ran for two seasons, with thirteen episodes a piece. But here is where my topic comes into play. The series has seventeen novels. The anime only covered four; novels one through three, skipped novel four, and covered novel five. Why did they do this? Where is my Season Three? Well, let’s look at that. It all boils down into these factors:

   · Who watched the show when it aired?

   · Did you buy the DVD?

   · Does the company have enough money to make a third season?

   · Would you watch a third season?

All these factors come into play when thinking about a new season. Why would a company make a new season when people wouldn’t watch it? I can’t speak for most people when I say that I would watch it in a heartbeat. That’s the first factor. Onto the second factor: Did I buy the DVD? Answer: Yes, I did. Most people don’t buy the DVD. They usually stream the show legally or illegally, which the latter reason brings me to my third factor: Does the company have enough money for a third season? Yes and no once again. They have the money, but perhaps since people watched the show illegally, they don’t want to waste their time with a third season. This is a risk companies have to take. When a company is on a budget, it’s hard to make another season if they’re already producing another show. This is why I will always support and tell others to support a company and watch legally. I would love to see a third season of Spice and Wolf one day. It would be amazing to see Holo and Lawerence continue their adventure. I don’t have time to sit down and read all seventeen novels, so to see it condensed into maybe two or three more seasons would be a delight. And now my final factor that I already answered: Do I want a third season: YES.

Despite these factors, most shows get more and more seasons based on popularity also. Look at Sword Art Online. Sword Art Online II was the effect of the first season. My opinions of SAO II is that it’s complete rubbish. It should have never been produced. I will always stand by the novels being the superior source of the series, but everyone wants to see their harem I guess. No matter if people watch the show legally or illegally, the show will always be made. There is a big following behind the show that has been popular ever since the first episode aired back in 2012. There is even a movie and another video game of it coming out. Spice and Wolf doesn’t have the same popularity that Sword Art Online has sadly, but that’s just the way it works.

Next time you finish a series, take these factors into effect on why there is no second or third season of your favorite show. Who knows? Maybe one day your favorite show will have its second or third season.
