Review: Jessica Jones (Spoiler Free)

After binge watching Jessica Jones the day of its release, I’m happy to say that overall, it definitely delivered. Marvel’s second Netflix series, the first being Daredevil, is absolutely phenomenal, both are. Both shows take place in the same television universe and I can’t wait to see what Luke Cage and Iron Fist will be like when the time comes.

Starting off with the obvious, the show is gorgeous. Marvel’s got money and it’s evident, the show isn’t like most shows you see on TV. Jessica Jones screams budget. The camera work is also pretty great, they tend to cut out and blur out the right parts for just the right moments and for just the right amount of time. Overall, the cinematography is extremely impressive to say the least.

The cast for Jessica Jones is great and very memorable. Aside from Jessica being a fantastic lead, the supporting characters were brilliant. Jessica was relatable and realistic in how she handled her various trials. At no given point does Jessica ever do anything that conflicts with her character. She’s a hard drinking woman who has survived a rough, traumatic past and she has flaws. She’s neither perfect nor completely deplorable and the viewers can see this perfectly. Krysten Ritter did such a good job bringing this character to life.

The supporting cast in Jessica Jones was also great and important. At no point will the viewers get upset when the focus changes to the secondary characters and their various subplots. From the weird couple that lives above Jessica, to the recovering drug attic in her building and even the damaged Luke Cage. Every character has their issues and they are all important enough not to feel like a waste of time or a detour from the central plot.

The reason why Jessica Jones is such a powerful show is because it’s rich with context and mature themes. Some of them are pretty dark, but realistic and essential. Alcoholism, off putting incestual relationships, rape, drug abuse, guilt and dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder. Jessica is an alcoholic and uses it to ease the pain she’s dealing with, plus she’s a victim of rape and dealing with PTSD. The show is extremely thought provoking and viewers should walk away from this series having gained something. Obviously, the series isn’t perfect. I found that the parts Daredevil excelled the best in Jessica Jones didn’t and vice versa. Fisk was probably one of the best things about Daredevil and to be completely honest, Kilgrave wasn’t very good. He offers a different kind of antagonist that people lots of people may appreciate but it wasn’t what I was expecting. Kilgrave could have been handled a lot better but David Tennant still was great to experience.

Jessica Jones also doesn’t have any mind blowing action sequences like Daredevil had. The narrative thrives off of its characters and provocative story telling. Daredevil has its action and fascinating antagonists. There aren’t any really great fight scenes and for those coming off of Daredevil, it’s possible that’s going to disappoint them. But ultimately, those two shows are not about the same thing at all therefore were handled differently.

To conclude, this second installment in Marvel’s Netflix series is a great hit and absolutely worth your time. There’s no reason for you to skip out on this show, even if you have no idea who Jessica Jones is. I assure you she is exactly what you need to experience, and soon. I can’t wit to see Luke Cage and Iron Fist. DC better watch out, Marvel is sinking it’s fangs into the TV world.
