Center Stage: Alessia Cara

Music is a weird thing. It’s something that is truly subjective in every way. There are tons of different types of sounds, genres and artists out there. I personally have no loyalty to any specific sound type or genre. I don’t listen to music, I feel it. If the overall sound resonates with my being then chances are I like what I’m experiencing. I can listen to music of other languages I don’t speak because music doesn’t have a language barrier. You can vibe with the vocals, melody, rhythm and beat even if you can’t understand the lyrics. If you’re anything like me, you may have been having trouble caring about new music or keeping up for that matter. The last artist I’ve followed from the moment they essentially started getting some buzz was J.Cole but I have a new upcoming favourite: Alessia Cara.

Born July 11, 1996, Alessia Caracciolo was born in Brampton, Ontario. She is a Canadian born songwriter and singer who’s currently signed with Def Jams Recordings. In the past year, Cara has become more than just a YouTube star even receiving positive commentary from Taylor Swift. Cara has done various covers of well-known songs such as “Bad Blood”. Alessia is working on her debut album titled “Know It All” which is probably coming out this fall. Currently, she has one single out called “Here” which has generated tons of positive reactions and buzz. On YouTube the song has over two million views.

“Here” is such a great debut song and part of me wonders if it can be topped anytime soon. It’s a powerful song about the “antisocial pessimist” being at a party they don’t want to be at. For the introvert who only ended up going to a party because their friends went, but in reality would have rather stayed at home. Ultimately, counting down the hours, minutes and seconds until it’s finally time to leave the jam. The song is refreshing and explicit. It’s funny because the beat and sound present the vibe of the kind of song you’d play at a party, but the lyrics are contradictory to that sound. It’s a party song about not being stoked about parties, brilliant.

One interesting couple of lines in the song is: “Excuse me if I seem a little unimpressed with this/ An anti-social pessimist, but usually I don't mess with this/ And I know you mean only the best and your /Intentions aren't to bother me.” Why you ask? This line speaks truth about the extroverted friends who constantly bug home bodied people to step out of their element, not realizing they’re doing more harm than good most of the time. They feel the need to make reserved people go out to clubs and whatnot for various reasons, believing it’s the right thing to do. If we’re being honest though, it’s a pain in the ass. I know I can relate and so can many withdrawn recluses. This song is very relatable as it is wonderful.

To wrap things up, I am excited to see what the young talented rising star from my city has to offer the music industry. She’s off to a good and refreshing start with her single “Here” and lookout for her upcoming album, “Know It All”. If you need me, I’ll be over here.
