Ageless Characters: How Old Are You

Spoilers: There's spoilers all over this from Marvel to DC and even Shonen Jump

The other day I was reading some Miles Morales stories and I asked myself "How old is this kid?" Miles started when he was 13 but he's also been Spider-Man for a year and taken a year off so he should be at least 15 but he hasn't actually aged physically, but they've acknowledged he's aged. It's also been said that he's in grade school which is un-beliavable because I don't know any 13 year old 5th graders. Shouldn't Miles be in High School by now, why hasn't he aged. Then I got to thinking. He's not the only one.

Jessica Jones is the wife of Luke Cage. She's gone from teenager dreaming of Johnny Storm to grown woman who has a child by Luke Cage, but Johnny hasn't aged. Luke won't age because he's got that Wolverine "I can't age anymore" ability due to the experiments that gave him his powers. That doesn't take away from the fact that she magically went from angst filled teenage girl to responsible hero, mother and adult. If you thought Marvel was the only offender you're far from correct.

DC might just be the worst offender of this in comic books. Dick Grayson, Jason Todd and Tim Drake are all basically the same age now. I'm not even sure how this has happened. Grayson aged up from Robin to Nightwing. Jason died when he was younger than Dick. He stayed dead but then he comes back at the same age as dick and older than Tim. Dick used to give Jason lectures now they're the same age. Does death age you differently? Tim was a kid getting lectures from Dick and being kicked around by Jason. Now he's a grown man. What? Let's not forget Batgirl was older than Dick at one point. Then they became the same age, then she became paralyzed and didn't age then she recovered and became the same age as Dick again. It's really dependent on if they're written to be in a relationship or not. Roy Harper has gone from kid to drug addicted pre-teen to teenage father to old man and back to the floating twenties with other sidekicks. Batman was 8 when his parents died after seeing Mark of Zoro which started running in 1940. Bruce should be 83 years old. That would make Superman 80. But, Superman is 29 according to some comics and mid 40s in others. It's ridiculous. Are we just picking and choosing ages? Comics are hardly the only media doing this.

We all know Dragon Ball Z. I'll cut the crap here. Gohan, Goten and Trunks all age up. Goku and Vegeta never age. Other saiyans around them age. Their children and even Brolly aged but not Goku and Vegeta. You could say Dragon Ball GT aged Vegeta but Goku hadn't changed at all and then they made him younger. But, we don't talk about GT. Ash Ketchum should be 28 by now. I find it extremely hard to believe that he's still a 10 year old child. Maybe he's just an old dwarf pretending to be a kid. Hell, Team Rocket always breaks the 4th wall. They know what's up. Also someone counted all the days passing during the Best Wishes season. 5 years 7 months and 14 days passed in that series alone. Great job guys.

It's even more obvious in The Simpsons. That show has been around several years longer than I have and nobody has aged. I remember when Bart and Lisa were older than me. Now they're still kids and, well I'm here. The kids in South Park have only gone from 9 to 10 after all these years. Arthur is the second longest animated series and yet, he's still 8. I used to love that show. Now it's like "Is he okay, why hasn't he aged at all?"

I'm not saying you need to age the characters on a realistic scale. Street Fighter tried that and gave up when they had the youngest characters reaching their 30s. I'm just saying, move them all at once. Don't age certain characters while leaving others the same. There's no reason 3/4 of the main Robin characters should be the same age. There's no reason Luke Cage should be getting a teenager pregnant. There's no reason for us to guess if Miles Morales is in 5th grade or 11th. Seriously just age them all at once, it worked for One Piece and Naruto.
