Game Reviews Are Stupid

I read album reviews. I don't always take every word seriously. But, they do give me some idea what the album is about. What the album contains and what it feels like. Every reviewer may not agree on the rating, but they can't deny the content. They may interpret it differently but they're still reviewing the same content. Game reviews are a lot different.

Maybe I'm crazy but I think it's weird that almost every game gets the similar scores from different companies who like and hate different parts of the game. It's weird that two reviewers can agree on every aspect of the game except the story, yet both give the game the same rating. What if companies are being paid and provided rewards for giving good scores. If you look at the GameInformer website it's not rare that they've received a large gift bundles along with their review copies of games. On top of that, they're owned by GameStop. They've got a motive to sell games. But again, I'm not sure they're paid or get bribes.

But, I'll tell you who is getting paid for biased reviews. There was a time when IGN was rating Xbox versions of games higher than the PlayStation versions of games. Doesn't it seem weird that they would rate the exact same game differently based on system? What if I told you that Microsoft pays the bills at IGN?

One important aspect of reviewing and reporting is that you aren't affected by bias. But can you really claim that you aren't bias when you've been running large Microsoft ads since 2010? How can you consider that as unbiased reporting? That's like me saying CP Time is the greatest podcast ever on an objective scale and it has nothing to do with me being on it.

So, the big guys are out. What about the little guys. What about guys like ModernWarNegro? Well, maybe some of those guys are being honest. Let's look at MWN. He'll do something like review a Naruto game poorly and talk about how bad the story is, then he'll ride for Naruto into the sunset because it draws attention and lines his pockets. Do whatever you have to do to get your money up, just don't pretend you aren't doing it to get your money up.

Game reviews are stupid. I don't read them. I don't watch them. They're usually biased. I don't have a problem with you being biased. I have a problem when you don't admit it. I'm not saying that you should stop reading game reviews. If they help you, continue reading and watching them. Just be aware that they usually have some form of bias behind them.

You can hear Darrell on the CP Time and Powerbomb Jutsu podcasts. He also plays classic arcade games on The Cabinet
