It's that time of year when holiday specials are on all the channels. Christmas themed episodes of all of your favorite shows, Frosty The Snowman and Rudolph as well as tales of Santa Claus. But Christmas themed anime are few and far between and most of the time, they feature the same plot. So what do you watch instead? You watch Chocotto Sister.
If you're looking for something heavy, on fan service or plot, you're not going to get that. This is just good old fashioned holiday fun, Japanese style. The plot revolves around Haruma. When he was younger his parents had a miscarriage and because of that his mother was forced to have a hysterectomy preventing from ever having children again. I know that sounds bad but don't Christmas stories always start out like that then the characters overcome obstacles for a happy ending?
Well Haruma's parents get over the loss but he asks Santa for a little sister like the one his parents were going to have. Of course there is no response from Santa. Fast forward to a 21 year old Haruma in his apartment. At that moment a female Santa breaks in and delivers a little sister to him. Shocked and confused Haruma explains that he wished for a sister years ago. Santa's response was "It takes time to make a sister." Then Santa abandons a child with a 21 year old college student. I'm a 21 year old college student and I can tell you I'm not prepared to take care of a child. Anyway, Haruma names the girl Choco and what follows is comedic genius.
Choco's only basic knowledge comes from an instruction manual she received from Santa. This manual is useless. I don't have kids but from what I've seen Choco acts just like one. The only problem is that manual doesn't explain any other type of relationships. This leads to Choco trying to imitate Chitose, the girl Haruma has a crush on. This leads to some awkward situations with Haruma and Chitose explaining that she can't be sister and girlfriend. But eventually everything works out fine.
It's a short series only 24 episodes so go ahead and give it a watch unless you really had subs. There's also a manga version but it's really drawn out longer than it needs to be so the anime version is perfect for the holiday season. Like I said, it's not plot heavy so don't expect to find the next hidden gem in this series. There is some nudity but none of it's sexual so no big deal. In fact there's nothing really sexual in this series other than a kiss Haruma and Chitose share so if you're looking for something sexy, this ain't that jack. So go ahead and give it a watch. I don't usually write about anime so I don't know how to end this, sooo Happy Holidays?
