Young Nigga Mentality - The Word Nigga

I'm borrowing Taiwan's series because I wrote a reply to a comment that was too long to be accepted. The comment was a reply to something a person posted on the first edition where Taiwan discusses his thoughts on marriage.

Dear Anonymous Commenter,

I won't reply to the marriage part because I didn't write the initial post, I did start this site so I'll respond to your comment on the use of the word nigga (notice I didn't censor it).

Your comment implies that we can't be blerds if we use the word nigga. That's ridiculous and you're small minded. The word blerd is a combination of black and nerd. As blerds we do our best to bring forward all of the issues facing not only the black community, but the nerd community as well. We've covered everything from Donald Sterling, to Michael Brown, to Gamergate, to black superheroes, to your favorite manga and everything in between.

Every blerd isn't going to be a cornball like Black Nerd Andre and we're not all going to try to be gangster like Hip Hop Gamer. Just like every black person, we're not a hive mind, we all think differently, we all have different backgrounds, upbringing and personalities. Even with all that, we're still blerds.

We don't use the word nigga frequently in the things we write but it can be found in a lot of our editorials and album reviews. It's not a word we shy away from. It's rare we go an entire episode of CP Time or Powerbomb Jutsu without every member of the show using the word nigga. You probably have no idea what those are. Those are two of the 4 podcast we host, the other two being Chicago K Pop and Kage Summit.

You probably had no idea about our podcast because you seem to have no idea about us. This site is made up of, as Taiwan put it, young niggas. None of us have finished college. None of us are married. One of us hasn't even finished high school. We are young niggas.

Because we are young niggas our views of the world differ vastly from yours. When I started blerds I wanted to be different than all the other blerd sites. I could have wrote for any of them, but I chose not to for one simple fact, they're old. Majority of the blerd sites that people know of are made up of people old enough to be my parents. We see things differently.

Blerds is a site made up of young people and because of that we deal with people like you a lot. People who know best or try to put us in our place. We've had sites completely ignore us. We've had other sites chastise us, but it's no big deal. We've also had some older people reach out and support us. Through all of that we've began to build a fanbase of young niggas.

This series is called young nigga mentality because it's going to give you a glimpse into what one young nigga thinks. The problem with a lot of the older black community is that they tell the younger members to sit down and know our place. They never take the time to look at the issues we face in day to day life.

I can't speak for Taiwan, but I do use the word nigga in every day conversations. Let me explain, if I'm hanging out with friends I'm not going to hold my tongue. This might sound shocking, I'll even say it around white friends. As for the word cracker, it is nowhere near comparable to the word nigga, but nice try. I'm more concerned with the fact that I fit the profile of young black male, 5'5-7'2 100lbs-500lbs than if white people hear me say or even say it. I have to make sure I don't get killed by the police for cosplaying like Darrien Hunt.

I'm a business student so I spend a lot of time in formal events and I promise you've I've never used the word nigga there, because that's a different environment.

Now, as for you looking for black media that you consider family friendly, that's up to you my nigga. I'm not a fan of censorship. It's not the job of the artist, writer, director, producer, singer, songwriter, rapper, athlete or anyone else to censor themselves for your family. That is your job as a parent to monitor the content that your children intake, not mine. If you don't find this content appropriate for children, I won't be upset. We don't make content for children.

I've said a lot here. Some of it may upset you, and offend you. In the words of Nas "If it offends you, it's meant to." You may not like what I've said, but in the words of Andre 3000 "You can take two of these and walk it out"

You can hear Darrell on the CP Time and Powerbomb Jutsu podcasts. He's also playing Pokemon Liquid Crystal on YouTube
