Gohan should have surpassed Goku

Man Gohan should have surpassed Goku but that wasn’t the case to be. I feel like Akira Toriyama (creator of Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z) really dropped the ball with Gohan.

To be honest in the beginning of Dragon Ball Z I didn’t even care for Gohan but that changed once the Cell saga started. Gohan began training with Goku and increased his strength as well as being able to turn super saiyan. Gohan would eventually unlock the ability to use super saiyan 2 due to circumstances (I’m assuming you know what I’m talking about). Gohan turning super saiyan 2 was epic and legendary, I’m just saying. Even though Gohan had assistance with defeating Cell, Gohan was the main focus of the Cell saga and not Goku. Goku pretty much told Cell that he couldn’t beat him and that Gohan would defeat him.

(Proof on my last statement about Goku and choosing Gohan to fight Cell)

The Cell saga felt like the passing of the torch from father to son but then came the Majin Buu Saga….. Man all of that character development was thrown right out the window. Goku would take the spotlight once again and even achieve the level of super saiyan 3 while poor Gohan only achieved his “Ultimate Power Up” (I doubt that his UPU was better than Goku’s ability to turn SS3). Gohan gets absorbed by Super Buu and game over. RIP Gohan’s chance of surpassing Goku. Of course he gets wished back to life with everyone else but he still isn’t as strong as Goku obviously.

Overall even though Gohan gets kicked to the backseat, Dragon Ball Z still ended on a good note. I just feel like Gohan should have been the one to surpass Goku in terms of strength and I wished Toriyama would have continued to make Gohan the star of the series after the Cell saga. Just my opinion though.

  1. Don't you think him being half human has anything to do with that?

  2. This seems like a great article, but I don't know enough about DragonBall to follow along. I was hoping to learn more about it. Checking out your other writing.

  3. That was the original plan but the Japanese fans hated the direction so toriyama changed it
