Movie Review: Sin City: A Dame To Kill For

The first Sin city boasted beautiful cinematography that made even the goriest of scenes look beautiful. The contrast between black and white and the few moments where a bright spot of color would light up the scene kept the viewer's attention. That was enough to distract you from the horrible plot. In the event that you watched it more than once the plot was so bad it turned Sin City into a comedy. Well, that cinematography can't save it this time and this plot is so bad it's cringe worthy, not laughable. This probably the worst movie I'll see this year and I purposely watch bad movies.

There's seriously nothing nice I can say about this movie except that I like the way the story is told and the way it's filmed. The cinematography is still amazing to me. Just because of the contrast and the way scenes are put together. But once I got past that it's still a bad movie. The stories are told in the classic noir style and I still love that. The way the story is narrated while colorless scenes are highlighted with things like blood or the eyes of various characters, ladies of the night etcetera, is just beautiful to me. Even with all that the movie couldn't be saved.

I enjoy movies with narration, especially the way Sin City does it. I just wish the narrator could clear up some of this mess. I understand Sin City is made up of multiple stories that are supposed to come together in some final showdown. But that didn't happen here. Multiple stories that would have been interesting as stand alone tales were pushed together in one muddied mess at the end that left me utterly confused when it ended. I understood everything up until the final moments when things were supposed to be coming together they did it in the most illogical ways. "Oh, Marv knew her from his past, not the other Sin City movie, just his past and we're not saying anymore about it. He's just going to help her now." If you understand the ending to this movie please leave a comment and help me out because I'm still confused.

There's always plenty of cringe worthy moments in this movie. In one scene a woman describes how the best sex she ever had was when she was raped at 15. She goes on and on about how it turned her on and then she asks the man she's with to rape her. He obliges and we're treated to a rape/sex scene where they have sex while he punches her in the ribs and chokes her. I get it, it's Sin City but the movie attempts to use sex to hide the dullness and the sex only makes it cringe worthy. Strippers are sexy. What isn't sexy is strippers on stage drinking 40s and spitting on the crowd. What isn't sexy is strippers pulling guns and shooting into the crowd for no reason. Yet the director, Robert Rodriguez, thought these would be great actions to cause the crowd to go crazy with glee. There's an old but short saying, it's simply "Sex sells." Robert Rodriguez has set out to make sure sex never sells, because there are a ton of sex scenes in this film that will make you question if you're watching a sex scene or not.

Sin City is filled with beautiful women in BDSM and stripper attires, guns, fast cars, sex, fights and general violence. It should have something that any man would love but instead it manages to make you walk away tired, defeated and somewhat disgusted. I usually just state my opinion on a movie and let people decide if they want to see it or not. Not this time. I'm telling you don't see this movie. Sin City: A Dame To Kill For is a beautiful train wreck of gore, filth and debauchery. There is nothing good about this movie except the visuals. NOTHING.
